Tom Cruise’s Running Style Has a Surprising Connection to an Outsiders Co-Star

Tom Cruise’s running style, much like his films, has gained nearly equal fame. It appears in almost every film he stars in, and it often involves him at full speed with hands slicked back, a signature move. The Mission: Impossible series, in particular, frequently features long runs of Cruise. Although it may appear mundane, it never fails to captivate due to the incredible athleticism showcased, adding suspense to the scene. Interestingly, this running style is said to have been inspired by one of his co-stars from The Outsiders.

Rob Lowe, a cast member in Cruise’s “Outsiders,” recently shared stories from his Hollywood past on the “Superfly” podcast, hosted by Dana Carvey and David Spade. During their conversation, Lowe discussed his collaboration with Tom Cruise on the timeless Francis Ford Coppola film. Lowe mentioned that after working together, they both learned proper running techniques, which were skillfully taught by their co-star Emilio Estevez’s running coach. In his own words:

As a cinema enthusiast, I have a feeling that Tom and I might share a common memory: we both may have learned to run under the tutelage of Emilio Estevez’s character, a running coach, if my recollection serves me right. This experience would have come after The Outsiders, and the man who trained us was Milan Tiff, an individual of great repute; he was part of the legendary 1968 U.S. Olympic team, having won the triple jump.

It’s apparent that the technique Cruise learned has stuck with him more than his fellow actors, and it’s now one of his trademarks. Given that he was tutored by an Olympian, it’s not surprising that his running style mimics a professional sprinter’s. Interestingly, it seems that both Cruise and some of his co-stars were initially taught the same fundamental running skills, as Lowe also noted:

We all practiced under Milan, and the key point was emphasized significantly. By the way, there’s an added element: a small flick, if I may add. It goes like this [demonstrates the gesture], and then you make a slight flap, mimicking a mini dolphin movement.

Despite the cruise run having significantly developed over time, there’s a clear foundation of it visible in his gait. I wouldn’t have imagined that Emilio Estevez’s running mentor was the one who established its distinctive style.

Rob Lowe has been open about the Oscar-nominated actor’s unyielding competitiveness on set and his desire to perform his own stunts in the past. This trait hasn’t waned with time, as Tom Cruise continues to execute many of his own stunts. Reminiscing about their days together on the set of “St. Elmo’s Fire,” Lowe recalled an instance where Cruise knocked him down during a sparring match. Given that they shared living quarters in a hotel while filming “The Outsiders,” Lowe is well-acquainted with Cruise’s habits.

This level of exertion hasn’t lessened one bit. Cruise is more than capable of going above and beyond, whether it’s a full-throttle dash in a running scene or taking risks with death-defying stunts in the latest Mission: Impossible movie. With The Outsiders , he was just starting to explore roles that required physicality. A big round of applause goes out to Emilio Estevez’s trainer, who eventually paved the way for the action star we recognize today.
