Jason Momoa’s ‘Braven’ Finds New Home on Peacock After Minecraft Movie Success

In 2018, Jason Momoa took on the role of Joe Braven, a family man and logger, in the action-thriller film “Braven.” This was before he portrayed Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison in this year’s blockbuster hit, “A Minecraft Movie“. Starting May 1, you can catch “Braven” on Peacock.

Initially, the film “Braven” earned approximately $854,000 at the box office, falling short of its projected $5 million budget. Contrastingly, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” also based on an original story by Mike Nilon, is expected to outperform in this regard. In this movie, Jason Momoa plays Joe, a logger residing near the border of the U.S. and Canada. When he encounters a gang of drug traffickers, he takes all necessary measures to ensure his family’s safety. Alongside Momoa, “Braven” features Garrett Dillahunt (known for “Fear the Walking Dead”), Jill Wagner (“Lioness”), Stephen Lang (“Avatar”), and Sala Baker.

Despite not being a commercial success, the film boasts an impressive 80% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 79% audience approval. Critic Tom Santilli from AXS praised Jason Momoa’s performance, stating that “Momoa shines as an action star in Braven; he’s a hero deserving of support.” Meanwhile, Joe Leydon from Variety commended the film, noting that “Braven is the type of straightforward yet expertly crafted action flick that draws the best from everyone involved.

A Minecraft Movie Sequel?

In a nutshell, “Momoa’s movie based on Minecraft,” featuring Jack Black, has grossed over $360 million at the domestic box office. Directed by Jared Hess, this film has significantly boosted Momoa’s global box office earnings to over $5 billion, with notable contributions also from films like “Fast X”, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, and the original Aquaman movie.

The success of the Minecraft movie has left little doubt about a sequel, with Warner Bros. executives confirming its likelihood. In 2025, it had the largest opening weekend of any film that year, generating discussions for a follow-up. Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairmen and CEOs of Warner Bros., have spoken about the sequel’s potential. De Luca has confirmed the plans, stating that the preparations are underway, “The agreements may not be fully signed yet, but the plans for a sequel are about to materialize – imminently.”
