Tina Fey EXPOSED: The Shocking Truth About The Golden Girls Reboot
Comedy icon and creator Tina Fey shoots down rumors of a remake of The Golden Girls.
In response to a fan-created poster depicting a potential remake of “The Golden Girls” featuring her alongside Amy Poehler, Lisa Kudrow, and Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey humorously commented. “Ah, I wasn’t aware of this one,” she said, after being presented with the poster which had been circulating online in 2024. “It’s amusing that it tricked people. I mean, why would we ever pose for a picture where Amy Poehler and Lisa Kudrow are dressed as characters, but we ourselves aren’t?” Fey went on to say, “If this deceived you, you might be a Baby Boomer. And if you’re Gen X, and this deceived you, seek medical attention. I wouldn’t dare touch this. It’s just too flawless. The original cast… they’re untouchable.
Back in 1985, I stumbled upon the groundbreaking sitcom “The Golden Girls” created by Susan Harris. This show was a game-changer, focusing on four fabulous older women – Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty – who, after being widowed, decided to share a house in sunny Miami. The series brilliantly portrayed the challenges and joys of their “Golden Years.”
Throughout its run, it was graced by an array of talented guest stars like Dick Van Dyke, Leslie Nielsen, George Clooney, and Quentin Tarantino. What a delight to watch!
The Golden Girls Remains Popular
The tremendous success of “The Golden Girls” enabled it to endure an impressive 180 episodes spread across 7 seasons. This popularity also sparked the creation of a long-lasting spinoff titled “Empty Nest,” which debuted in 1988. Starring Richard Mulligan, this series followed a recently widowed pediatrician whose daughters moved into his Miami home. “Empty Nest” built its main characters as neighbors to those on “The Golden Girls,” with occasional minor crossovers occurring between the shows. In all, it accumulated 170 episodes over 7 seasons.
1992 saw the continuation of “The Golden Girls” with “The Golden Palace,” a series that lasted one season with 24 episodes and featured Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty in the same cast. This time, they were set within the hotel that gave the show its name. Additionally, Don Cheadle played the manager of the hotel named Roland Wilson, while Billy L. Sullivan and Cheech Marin also joined the crew. However, it wasn’t the only spinoff of “The Golden Girls” to air. The title of last spinoff goes to “Nurses,” a direct spinoff of “Empty Nest,” which often included characters from both previous series. It ran for 68 episodes across 3 seasons from 1991 to 1994.
The Golden Girls is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
