Rory McCann: From Westeros Hound to Mysterious Jedi in Star Wars Ahsoka Season 2!

In the upcoming Season 2 of Ahsoka, Rory McCann is set to join the cast and step into the role previously played by Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll. Unfortunately, Stevenson passed away prior to the release of Ahsoka’s first season. As there is more of Skoll’s tale to unfold, Rory McCann, best known for his portrayal of Sandor Clegane (also known as “The Hound”) in other productions, will bring the former Jedi character to life onscreen in Ahsoka’s next chapter.

A significant portion of Baylan Skoll’s past is veiled in secrecy, however, it has been unveiled by Ahsoka that he was initially a Jedi Knight and commander during the Clone Wars. Remarkably, Skoll managed to endure the Jedi Purge triggered by Order 66, and furthermore, discovered that Anakin Skywalker had transformed into the Sith Lord, Darth Vader.

Through the course of the series “Ahsoka”, Baylan Skoll, who was once a Jedi, strayed from his path, succumbed to the dark side, became known as a Lord, and tutored a young Force-wielder named Shin Hati. It’s noteworthy that Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati are among several wolf-related names found in Dave Filoni’s “Star Wars” universe.

The Lupine Inspiration For Baylan Skoll

The Norse Mythology Behind Baylan Skoll

According to Norse legends, Sköll and Hati are celestial wolves, with Sköll pursuing the sun and Hati pursuing the moon. The prophesied end of days (Ragnarök) takes place when these wolves finally catch their divine targets. As for Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati in the Star Wars series, their objectives and future developments remain unclear at this point. However, it is noteworthy that their names share a connection with wolves, following in the footsteps of Dave Filoni’s recurring wolf references in his works.

Dave Filoni Has A Well-Known Appreciation For Wolves

His Own Star Wars Character Is Named “Trapper Wolf”

It’s no hidden fact that Dave Filoni harbors a deep affection for all things related to wolves. This admiration was sparked when he watched the 1983 movie “Never Cry Wolf.” The film not only ignited his fondness for wolves in their natural form, but also piqued his interest in the symbolic significance of wolves across various cultures. Throughout his tenure as a creator within the Star Wars universe, Filoni has consistently incorporated references to wolves, starting with Clone Commander Wolffe from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, who heads the 104th Battalion, also known as the Wolfpack.

In the TV series, Star Wars Rebels, Filoni significantly incorporated Loth-wolves, intelligent and Force-sensitive wolves from the planet Lothal, into the storyline of its final season. Interestingly, Dave Filoni also portrays a character in real life for Star Wars in The Mandalorian – a New Republic pilot named Trapper Wolf. It’s worth noting that two characters within the Star Wars universe share the name Marrok, referencing a knight from Arthurian legend who transformed into a werewolf. This name is given to Embo’s pet anooba in The Clone Wars series, and to a former Imperial Inquisitor in season 1 of Ahsoka.
