Dunster is currently busy with two ongoing series: “The Devil’s Hour,” where he plays Mike Stevens in a British thriller alongside Peter Capaldi, and “Surface,” where he portrays Quinn in an Apple TV+ psychological thriller.

On the November 22, 2024 episode of the “Always Be Comedy” podcast, Dunster suggested a positive outlook for his role in “Ted Lasso” season 4. When queried about the new season, Dunster hinted that he might be open to reprising his character.

In any situation, I’d promptly grab the phone, and if Jason Sudeikis ever asked me to jump, I’d respond with a cheery “How high?”.

Dunster subtly implied that it’s rather uncommon for Sudeikis to reach out to him concerning the show, Ted Lasso.

His debut in Season 1 immediately showcased his irritating and self-absorbed nature, contributing to a hostile team dynamic at Richmond. As a loanee from Man City, he seemed indifferent to the club, but as the season progressed, we began to glimpse the hidden depths he’d been hiding.

Despite being there physically, Jamie’s father was largely absent from his life until his football career took flight. From that point on, Jamie felt compelled to make his tough and demanding father proud, mainly through victories. In the second season, Jamie temporarily abandoned football for a reality show, which could be seen as a subtle jab at his father, but he eventually returned to the field. Manchester City declined him, but Richmond hesitantly welcomed him back. The turning point in Jamie’s life occurred in season 2, episode 8, titled “Man City”, where he faced a significant test of his resolve.

Following a public scolding from his father among teammates, he retaliates against the man who’s tormented him, delivering a punch. Overwhelmed, he weeps in full view for the first time, a display of vulnerability never before seen. In this emotional scene, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) offers a comforting embrace. This tender moment signifies a significant progression for the character. To culminate his growth throughout season 2, Jamie makes an unprecedented move for a self-centered player, giving the decisive penalty kick to Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández), his longtime adversary, ultimately securing the victory.

In Season 3, Jamie reached a climactic point after working with Roy, a relationship that was previously inconceivable. Now, he’s anticipated to join Man City, facing a daunting challenge from his past disguised as the club itself. In the penultimate episode of Ted Lasso season 3, Jamie has heart-to-hearts with his mother, Ted, Roy, and Keeley (Juno Temple), helping him regain his self-assurance, manage his injury, and score the decisive goal against his former team and his father. This is as traditional an emotional journey as they come.

There’s No Good Reason For Jamie To Return To The Series

Jamie’s Arc Would Lose Meaning If He Returned

In the popular show Ted Lasso, Jamie Tartt is skillfully crafted as one of its most compelling characters. His transformation from a haughty, arrogant individual into a selfless teammate isn’t an overnight change; instead, it’s a gradual process that unfolds over three seasons, receiving assistance from numerous key characters in the series. This well-paced character development never feels rushed or extended unnecessarily. It takes all 34 episodes Jamie appears in for viewers to truly grasp his complexities. Skipping an episode could mean missing out on a crucial step in his character’s evolution.

Discussing character development, bringing back Jamie for Ted Lasso season 4 could pose quite a challenge. Since Jamie has already made significant strides in his character arc, moving him backward would be unfair and detract from the progress he’s made over three seasons. Introducing new challenges for Jamie might be tempting, but if these challenges surpassed what he faced earlier, it would diminish the authenticity of his journey, making it seem less impactful. Essentially, bringing back Jamie could risk undermining the growth he’s demonstrated and appear more as a gratification for fans rather than an organic part of his character development.

Plenty Of Other Ted Lasso Characters Should Return For Season 4

Keeley Needs To Finish Out Her Storyline

Additionally, it seems that there are numerous characters in Ted Lasso season 4 whose stories could use a more satisfying conclusion. Not every character received the same level of resolution as Jamie Tartt, and not all storylines were thoroughly developed. It would be beneficial to bring back some characters for Ted Lasso season 4, such as Roy, Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed), Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), and perhaps most notably, Keeley.

In the third season of Ted Lasso, Keeley’s storyline didn’t receive a satisfying conclusion and she didn’t find a romantic partner. This reflects a lack of character autonomy that was characteristic of her time on the show. It would be fitting for Keeley to have a significant role in the main plot of season 4, similar to Jamie Tartt’s arc. With the possibility of Keeley and Rebecca starting a women’s football team, this could provide an excellent chance for her to have a well-rounded character journey.
