Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt’s Surprising Feud and Unexpected Bromance Revealed After 30 Years

There’s been a lot of talk over the years suggesting they didn’t agree on many things, so it sparked curiosity when it was announced that Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise would be competing at the box office this summer. Pitt with his racing film F1 and Cruise with the last installment of Mission: Impossible. This news raised some intrigue in Hollywood.

However, it’s worth noting that at 62 years old, Tom Cruise has left some astonished by his warm remarks towards Brad Pitt, also 61. Interestingly, their friendship, often referred to as a “bromance,” started during the filming of Interview with the Vampire in 1994, where they both played key roles.

Speaking about his friend Brad Pitt, Cruise commented on Pitt’s upcoming movie: “I think it’s terrific that Brad will be behind the wheel again. He’s an exceptional driver, let me assure you.

In our time working together on “Interview with the Vampire,” we often engaged in an unusual competition – go-kart racing. After wrapping up our scenes, we’d race go-karts all night long. He’s an exceptional driver, to put it mildly.

For the first time in over three decades, the career paths of directors Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and Brad Pitt will intersect, as Tom Cruise appears eager to quash any speculation about a disagreement or competition between them regarding their upcoming collaboration on F1.

Reports indicate that production challenges arose during the filming of the highly-acclaimed Vampire movie, which was filmed in New Orleans and London. It appears that Brad Pitt found his character Louis de Pointe du Lac’s restrictions particularly bothersome, as he was transformed into a vampire by Tom Cruise’s Lestat de Lioncourt in the storyline.

Brad Pitt found it less than satisfying to often play second fiddle to Tom Cruise, and their working relationship wasn’t always harmonious due to Cruise’s intense demeanor.

At that point, Pitt was known as a Hollywood ‘bad boy’ – keen on weed, booze and nightclubs. 

It seems he was romantically linked with Thandie Newton, a 52-year-old British actress, who appeared briefly in the movie. Simultaneously, Cruise was already a major film star, embarking on his second marriage with Nicole Kidman at that time.

Despite Pitt expressing discontent with the movie and their lives being quite distinct, the fact that Cruise revealed they often spent leisure time during filming racing go-karts suggests that there may not have been any deep-rooted animosity between them.

After parting ways with Angelina Jolie in 2016, it seems that Brad Pitt has developed admiration for Tom Cruise, not just personally, but also professionally, given that both are now film producers. Moreover, Pitt appreciates Cruise’s unwavering advocacy for the cinematic arts.

Despite having vastly distinct social environments and viewpoints, with Cruise being deeply rooted in Scientology and Pitt exhibiting an artistic, bohemian spirit (interestingly, their shared passion for fast cars and motorbikes appears to be the only point of convergence), a reliable source reveals that they hold each other in high regard.

The choice of Tom Cruise as Lestat in the Vampire series has been a subject of debate from the beginning, with author Anne Rice preferring other actors like Julian Sands or Boris Godunov for the role instead.

Pitt thought that the role was going to be taken by Daniel Day-Lewis, who was a hero of his. 

In an unexpected turn of events, I found myself taking on a role that many initially believed wouldn’t suit me. However, with determination and a bit of magic, I managed to make it work.

Even though there were some lingering strains, as revealed in an interview, Pitt admitted that he found Cruise’s well-known optimism somewhat grating.

At some stage during the shooting process, I found myself growing increasingly distant from him, as if we were polar opposites.

Instead of him consistently offering a handshake as a greeting, I might accidentally run into you. Beneath the surface, there seemed to be an unspoken rivalry that often prevented us from having genuine conversations.

He stated: ‘For six months, I’ve been in the pitch-black, using contact lenses and makeup to portray a female character. Now, I can confidently express: “This situation requires resolution, let’s address it, or I must leave.”‘

According to director Neil Jordan, it wasn’t hidden that Pitt found the movie-making process unpleasant, and it was also common knowledge that Cruise wasn’t the preferred choice for the leading role.

Anne Rice explicitly declined the inclusion of Tom. However, I strongly believed that I could draw an exceptional performance from him, and he shared this sentiment as well.

I found him exceptional in that film. Tom Cruise is remarkably precise, much like a well-oiled machine. When he’s on a roll, there’s an intimidating quality about him.

Further tensions arose on set owing to their contrasting acting styles.

Jordan commented: ‘Tom is more sculpted and significantly better-prepared; Brad must sense that. However, he was an incredibly intriguing performer.’

‘I know it sounds like Hollywood bullshit, but I really enjoyed working with both of them.’

As time went by, it felt like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise were subtly dancing around one another. This dance became evident when Tom took center stage in the 2008 World War II thriller, Valkyrie, followed closely by Brad’s role in Inglourious Basterds the next year.

During an interview, Pitt seemed to refer to the film “Valkyrie” as “foolish,” but his representative quickly clarified that this wasn’t accurate – Pitt was merely trying to avoid any disagreement with Cruise.

And now, Cruise is generously taking time to talk up Pitt’s summer blockbuster alongside his own. 

With great excitement, he exclaimed: ‘Brad is working on a film titled Formula 1, alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Joe Kosinski. I’m really looking forward to catching this movie this summer – it promises to be fantastic!’

In the year 2023, while Pitt was in the UK shooting F1, it’s said that Cruise recommended he attend Wimbledon for the tennis tournament – Cruise often attends this annual event.

In the end, Cruise was too busy making Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning to join him. 

There were discussions suggesting that they could attend the Goodwood Festival of Speed as a pair that same year. Perhaps they’ll manage to coordinate their schedules for a visit this summer…
