In the original webtoon, Si-eun’s traumatic past is presented through intermittent flashbacks. However, for the live-action K-drama version titled “Weak Hero Class 1”, director-writer You Su-min and executive producer Han Jun-hee chose to expand that backstory into an entire eight-episode season. As explained by You to TIME, “The original webtoon is a straightforward school action story where Yeon Si-eun seems to progress one stage at a time, like a game.” If they had stuck with the original narrative from the start, he felt it wouldn’t have allowed for a comprehensive story. Instead, they decided to delve into how Si-eun and his friends initially bonded and later drifted apart in order to fully develop the plot.

Now that Weak Hero Class 2 has been released on Netflix in its entirety, following a month after the debut of its first season, it can devote its attention to the primary storyline from the webtoon without sacrificing the depth or impact of Si-eun’s history. Let’s delve into the key events of this new season, the dramatic conclusion, and speculate about potential developments for a hypothetical Season 3.

Si-Eun’s new friends in Weak Hero Class 2

At the start of “Weak Hero Class 2”, Si-eun is deeply scarred by trauma, but he yearns for companionship, as Park explains to TIME. Park wondered if such a connection could really materialize for Si-eun, emotionally speaking. Initially hesitant, fellow students Park Hu-min (from “Namib”), Seo Jun-tae (from “XO Kitty”), and Ko Hyeon-tuk (from “Uprising”) eventually manage to penetrate Si-eun’s protective barriers, ultimately forming a new friendship with him.

Park Hu-min, also known as Baku, is renowned for his formidable fighting abilities at Eunjang. Ryeo-un describes him as not particularly skilled in combat, but rather incredibly strong by nature. “He throws powerful, heavy punches and often resorts to delivering a massive blow instead of focusing on more refined techniques,” she explains. Baku’s strength has shielded Eunjang from the brutal influence of the Union, an alliance of gangs originating from the local high schools. However, when the season starts, Baku is absent from school due to suspension, creating an opening for the Union to infiltrate the student body at Eunjang.

Ko Hyeon-tuk, or Gotak as he is commonly called, is not only a teammate but also the closest friend of Baku on their basketball squad. His martial arts past gives him an edge in combat situations. As Lee puts it, “Being a former taekwondo athlete means he’s skilled in utilizing his legs for powerful kicks, which sets him apart from other players.

At the beginning of the school year, Jun-tae is forced into the role of messenger for the Eunjang bullies. Initially, he follows Hyo-man’s orders and steals students’ phones. However, after being encouraged by Si-eun, Jun-tae finds the courage to assert himself and protect others. Choi remarks that while Jun-tae may not be a strong fighter physically, he has abilities that can help in a fight, in a broader sense. He knows how to take a hit without making it too painful… In essence, I think he possesses unique ways of contributing to a fight or conflict.

How does union leader Na Baek-jin know Baku?

In the storyline of “Weak Hero Class 2,” my focus shifts towards the creation of Si-eun’s new circle of friends, all while navigating the tumultuous environment of the Union. This powerful organization is spearheaded by the formidable and cunning teen, Na Baek-jin, a character also known as Bae Na-ra in “D.P.” It’s challenging to find someone who can match his combat skills, given his brilliance and ruthless nature.

Baek-jin and Baku have a complex friendship, rooted in their childhood bond when Baku protected Baek-jin from bullies by teaching him self-defense techniques. However, this act of kindness has left Baku bearing the guilt for any harm Baek-jin may inflict using those skills. Interestingly, despite this burden, Baek-jin continues to desire their friendship, even going so far as to manipulate situations to bring Baku back into his circle, such as when he coerced Baku to rejoin the Union during the season’s progression.

To make the narrative more impactful, I felt it was essential to intensify the emotional aspects within the story. To achieve this, the development of character relationships needed to be handled carefully, and the foundation of the setting had to be solid. The tale of Baek-jin and Baku appeared fitting to underscore our series’ theme and introduce powerful dramatic elements into the plotline. In a story that primarily explores the beauty of friendship, this fractured camaraderie serves as an effective representation of the joy and sorrow associated with such bonds.

In the last episode, it becomes clear that Baek-jin has been secretly giving funds from his illicit business operations to a children’s home. It suggests that Baek-jin might have spent his childhood there, given the intimate connection between him and the woman managing the orphanage who accepts his donations. She expresses concern about how he acquires such significant amounts of money.

Weak Hero Class 2’s ending: Si-Eun’s master plan

In a grand climax, Class 2 of the Weak Heroes confronts the student body of Eunjang in an intense battle. This battle takes place on a muddy basketball court. If the Union emerges victorious, Eunjang will align with them. Conversely, if the Union loses, Baek-jin’s gang will disband, ensuring tranquility for Eunjang.

Before the skirmish, Si-eun employs his intelligence and academic prowess to devise a strategy. Initially, he enlists Geum Seong-ju, who is Lee Jun-young from the movie ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’, and a trusted associate of Baek-jin in the Union. Seong-ju finds satisfaction within the Union, yet craves the thrill of violence even more. Eager to inflict greater chaos, he consents to disclose confidential financial documents.

In this scenario, Si-eun requests Choi Hyo-man to share details with the lower members of the union, and Choi agrees – he yearns to be a trusted figure in someone’s scheme. The revelation that Baek-jin withdrew large sums from the temporary account stirs up tension among his associates who are primarily driven by financial gain. As a result, on the day of the battle, the morale and strength of the Union troops seem to wane.

Regrettably, Seong-je shows no allegiance and consents to assault Si-eun on Baek-jin’s behalf early in the day of the match. Pretending there’s additional proof at Baek-jin’s bowling alley that could permanently dismantle the Union, he deceives Si-eun into going there. With Jun-tae’s assistance, Si-eun manages to break free, but arrives late for the fight.

While Baku was giving his best to challenge Baek-jin, he told his longtime friend, “This isn’t what I taught you for,” before repeatedly attacking his arms and shoulders. The two were evenly matched, but Baek-jin ultimately emerged victorious. Just as everyone thought the Union had prevailed, Si-eun appeared on the scene. He donned his brass knuckles and targeted Baek-jin’s legs, altering the outcome of the fight.

Si-eun acknowledges that he doesn’t stand a chance against Baek-jin in a straight fight, but he can prolong the battle until Baku recovers enough strength. When Baek-jin inquires about the room for error, Si-eun replies with gritted teeth and on the verge of giving out, “We’re within that margin.” Baku rises again, ultimately defeating a weary Baek-jin, signifying Eunjang’s victory and the Union’s defeat.

Staging the final fight

During the planning phase for the climactic battle, about a month’s worth of time was dedicated to its filming. Han emphasized that the primary concern was ensuring the safety of all actors involved. Given that it was an action scene with numerous individuals engaged in combat while rain was falling, medical staff were always on alert and the actors’ conditions were regularly monitored between takes.

The term “good condition” encompassed not just physical well-being, but also emotional stability, as the final fight featured some of the most emotionally draining scenes across the entire season. Han notes that the actors, who had to sustain such intense emotions for an entire month, must have been quite exhausted in body and mind, which is why we took extra care during this period.

Ryeo-un shares that the action scenes during filming were thrilling, reminiscent of what boys fantasize about as they grow up. He explains to TIME that all the actors on set were genuine performers, not just background extras, which made everyone deeply invested in this particular scene. Despite being a bit challenging physically, he mentions that even Min-yeong, who wasn’t required to participate, would often visit the set to motivate and cheer them on.

Su-ho and Beom-seok’s Weak Hero Class 2 appearances

The final episode of Weak Hero Class 1 finds Su-ho in a coma. The unpredictable outcome of his closest companion’s state troubles Si-eun throughout the series. He frequently goes to the hospital to see Su-ho, and shares with his unconscious friend the challenges he faces. “To Si-eun, these two are the initial friends he has ever had, and he truly yearned for them when they approached him,” Park explains to TIME about the significance of Beok-seok and Su-ho’s appearances in Season 2. He cannot simply move forward without considering them.

In Episode 7, the character Si-eun has a mental conversation with Beom-seok. In this imagined chat, Si-eun expresses regret and guilt over not being able to help Beom-seok more during their friendship. Park describes this scene as one where, when Si-eun is comatose, he seeks out Su-ho, and in his dreams, he encounters Beom-seok who seems to reprimand him, saying something like, “Are you making new friends again?” This, according to Park, underscores the deep bond between these two characters as they continue to have an impact on Si-eun even after their separation.

In Episode 8, while hanging out with Baku, Gotak, and Jun-tae, Si-eun receives a call: Su-ho has regained consciousness. Overwhelmed by feelings, he rushes to visit his longtime friend, accompanied by his recent acquaintances. Upon seeing Si-eun, Su-ho greets him as if no time has elapsed, expressing concern. Noticing the new faces, Su-ho, who has always wished for Su-ho’s companionship, is pleased. “I’m glad to see you’re okay,” he says. The season concludes with Si-eun’s smile.

Who kills Baek-jin? Mid-credits funeral explained

After the confrontation, Baek-jin vanishes, leaving me pondering, “Will Baek-jin finally find the correct answer to the question he missed?” This thought lingers in my narration as Si-eun. Despite the pain inflicted upon me, I can’t help but empathize with this antagonist. If Beom-seok is the tragic hero of ‘Weak Hero Class 1’, then Baek-jin seems to be the tragic hero of ‘Weak Hero Class 2’.

In a scene during the mid-credits, Han Jeong-mi (Jo Jung-suk from “Hospital Playlist”) is depicted approaching Seong-je with an offer to take over Baek-jin’s position. Jeong-mi leads the adult gang, Cheongang, which rules their district. When questioned about Baek-jin’s whereabouts, Jeong-mi claims ignorance. However, a wreath sent to Baek-jin’s funeral from Cheongang hints that it was Jeong-mi who orchestrated the teenager’s untimely demise. It seems likely that Baek-jin was killed due to his inability to lead the Union effectively, which also reflected poorly on him within Cheongang.

At Baek-jin’s funeral, Si-eun, Baku, Go-tak, and Jun-tae were all in attendance. Among them, Baku appeared deeply saddened by the loss of his longtime friend. As Ryeo-un explained to TIME, despite their growing distance, there remained a trace of friendship within Baku. In the final altercation between the two characters, Ryeo-un was seen smiling while throwing punches and engaging in combat with Baku. This, according to Ryeo-un, suggested that his character was jokingly sparring with an old friend, reminiscent of their childhood play dates since they had grown up together.

Regarding filming the funeral scene, Ryeo-un expresses: “When Baek-jin truly passed away, I was deeply saddened in real life too, and I genuinely felt emotional while acting during that scene because we are close friends off-set as well.” This heartrending scene hints at potential future plot developments and underscores the enduring value of the bond between Baek-jin and Baku, which though lost initially through Baek-jin’s actions and eventually his untimely demise, continues to hold significance for Baku.

In conversation with TIME about working alongside director You on Class 1 and 2, Han shared that a key theme of the series is friendship. The idea of friendship is something most people are acquainted with, yet we often overlook its significance. However, in this show, there’s a line where Si-eun remarks, “I realized it’s good to have friends.” I believe this series will resonate more deeply when you reflect on your own friendships and the value they hold in your life.

Weak Hero Class 3: Will the K-drama have a third season?

Although no formal declaration has been made yet regarding the third season of “Weak Hero Class,” it appears that another installment might be on the horizon, considering the show’s impressive performance to date. The first season quickly climbed its way into Netflix’s Global Top Ten shortly after its Netflix debut, three years after its initial broadcast premiere.

The probability of a third season hinges on the success of “Weak Hero Class 2”. Han, in a recent interview, shared that he and the director had discussed potential storylines for another installment over a drink after wrapping up “Class 2”, but no concrete plans have been made. However, he believes there are more engaging tales to tell, provided the audience continues to enjoy “Class 2”. If approved, the third season is expected to chronicle Si-eun’s high school years from the third year through graduation.
