Why Yoda Speaks Backwards: George Lucas’s Surprising Reason Revealed
George Lucas has finally revealed the answer to a question Star Wars fans have had for decades.
80-year-old filmmaker whose Lucasfilm is producing a fresh Star Wars installment featuring Ryan Gosling (aged 44), was marking the 45th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back during the opening night of the 2025 TCM Classic Film Festival, held in Los Angeles.
In a chat with Ben Mankowitz from TCM, George Lucas unveiled the secret behind Yoda’s unique way of speaking.
As a fervent admirer putting this into my own words, I recall the director saying something along the lines of: “I find that when using standard English, it may not capture as much attention from the audience.
However, if his speech is accented or difficult to comprehend, they tend to concentrate more on the content of what he’s communicating.
Speaking about the difficulty he encountered, Lucas explained that Yoda served as the film’s wise guide. His task was to make audiences truly attentive – particularly those who were 12 years old.
It seems that the issue was effectively addressed since its release in 1980. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back grossed over $550 million globally upon its debut.
In discussing his creative approach, the director explained, “I sketch out my ideas much like a blueprint – there’s not too much detailed information included.
‘And when I got the script [for ‘Star Wars’] done, there was a 130 to 180 pages,’ he explained.
I divided it into three sections, explaining, “I will concentrate on the initial segment as we won’t have enough funds to complete the entire project altogether.
Lucas agreed to a fee that, considering current standards, appears minuscule for creating the initial movie; however, there was a justification behind his decision.
In response, they stated, “I proposed doing it for a fee of fifty thousand dollars, encompassing both writing, directing, and producing… Yet, I also desire to have the sequels. Moreover, I want the rights since I intend to create those films regardless of what becomes of this first one.
Another unusual condition of the contract would end up changing his life, and the film industry.
In response to my request for licensing, they inquired, “What is licensing?” Ultimately, they agreed to his conditions regarding licensing.
They conversed among themselves, remarking, “He won’t be capable of achieving that. Creating a toy or anything costs them a billion dollars and an entire year. That venture doesn’t hold any profit whatsoever.

According to CCLCT.com, Star Wars toys have earned some $32 billion.
Additionally, Lucas remembered feeling unimpressed with how 20th Century Fox promoted the movie. As a result, he decided to take charge himself.
He disclosed that he took the children for walks through Disneyland, Comic Cons, and similar places to promote the film.
‘And that’s why Fox was so shocked when the first day the lines were all around the block.’
