James Gunn Squashes Garrett Dillahunt as Green Arrow Rumors in ‘Lanterns’
Over a day and night, whispers about Garrett Dillahunt potentially portraying Oliver Queen (also known as Green Arrow) in the DCU series called Lanterns began circulating, but these rumors were debunked by James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios. Later in November 2024, it was confirmed that Dillahunt indeed joined the cast of Lanterns , playing a new character named William Macon. Described as a contemporary cowboy with a suspicious and self-righteous nature, he hides his true colors behind a charming exterior. On April 24, 2025, Dillahunt posted a series of photos on Instagram, showing himself in a Green Arrow costume with the caption “Ollie Ollie oxin free” and some storyboard images; however, this post was later deleted.
A post that was removed earlier had people thinking that actor Dillahaunt might be playing Green Arrow in the upcoming movie “Lanterns”. However, when asked about it on social media, James Gunn, co-president of DC Studios, laughed and said no. To clear up any confusion, Dillahaunt himself explained that the costume he wore was an old Halloween outfit he used years ago for Green Arrow. He clarified that his character William Macon isn’t Green Arrow, as new details about Macon have been confirmed. He described Macon as a one-legged, paranoid, conspiracy-theorist old man. You can read Dillahaunt’s post below for more details.
Is Green Arrow in HBO’s Green Lantern Series?
In the comics, Garrett Dillahunt’s character, Oliver Queen (Green Arrow), and Hal Jordan had a famous partnership in the “Green Lantern/Green Arrow” series from 1970 to 1972. This storyline, known as “Hard-Travelling Heroes,” was about these two emerald heroes traveling across the country, addressing real-world issues like racism, drug abuse, and inequality in welfare. Since this comic played a significant role in defining both characters, it’s not surprising that some aspects of it may have influenced the DC Universe, such as introducing Green Arrow into the mix.
In another scenario, there were doubts if the DC Universe (DCU) would prefer to present an older version of Green Arrow, given that John Dillahunt is 60 years old. This could potentially align well with Hal Jordan’s actor, Kyle Chandler, who is also 59. However, this would essentially restrict the time the DCU spends with Oliver Queen. Moreover, Dillahunt’s previous character portrayal does not in any way resemble Oliver Queen, which should have been a clear sign that he was not intended to play the Emerald Archer in the DC Universe.
Although Green Arrow won’t appear in Lanterns, the series boasts a rich roster of DC characters, including Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner from Superman. Ulrich Thomsen takes on the role of Sinestro, an iconic Green Lantern adversary, and the addition of Paul Ben-Victor has sparked rumors that he might portray Red Lantern Atrocitus. Fans will eagerly anticipate Green Arrow’s debut in the DCU at a future time.
