A terrifying Australian horror is on TV tonight

Prior to assuming the role of Mary Brown in “Paddington in Peru“, Emily Mortimer had previously portrayed a worried mother in the Australian horror film, “Relic“.

In the movie titled “Relic“, Mortimer assumes the role of Kay, as she and her daughter Sam, played by Bella Heathcote, return to their secluded ancestral home to attend to Kay’s mother Edna (Robyn Nevin), who is battling dementia.

If you enjoy horror movies with an atmospheric feel, led by a female protagonist and using animatronics instead of computer-generated imagery for the frightening scenes, then you might really appreciate the movie called “Relic“.

Tonight, you can catch the critically-acclaimed movie by director Natalie Erika James that was released in 2020 on BBC Two, airing at 10 pm.

On a Friday night, when I find myself away from home and hankering for a scary movie, I can always count on streaming it via BBC iPlayer whenever I’m in the mood.

The relic wouldn’t evoke fear if it weren’t associated with some peculiar, possibly otherworldly incidents taking place at Edna’s cottage. In this narrative, James (alongside Christian White) adds an emotional layer to the haunted house theme by skillfully crafting the script.

In 2020, the movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and it boasts actor Jake Gyllenhaal as one of its producers. Notably, the Russo brothers, known for their work on Avengers: Endgame, took on the role of executive producers.

The movie served as James’ initial directorial venture in features, placing her prominently among upcoming genre directors worth keeping an eye on.

In the previous year, she collaborated on both writing and directing another horror movie, this time a prequel to “Rosemary’s Baby” called “Apartment 7A”. Julia Garner portrayed Terry Gionoffrio in the film. Unfortunately, it didn’t fare well upon its release, receiving a low score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Subsequently, the director will lead the production of horror film “Saccharine.” In this movie, actress Midori Francis from “Grey’s Anatomy” portrays a medical student who participates in a bizarre weight loss trend involving consuming human remains and is tormented by the spirit of the person she has consumed.

Relic airs on BBC Two on Friday, 25 April at 10pm and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
