The award-winning comedy series from HBO/MAX titled “Hacks” introduces fresh guest appearances and cameos during the initial part of its fourth season. Although the two-episode debut of “Hacks” season 4 primarily delved deep into the fierce rivalry between Deborah Vance, played by Jean Smart, and Ava Daniels (portrayed by Hannah Einbinder), the new writer of her late-night show, it also brought in a few new and familiar faces within its cast.

In the third episode of Hacks season 4, the show made a comeback to Las Vegas and found itself juggling an array of both fresh and familiar supporting characters. So far, Hacks season 4 has moved further into the realm of dramedy, while maintaining its distinctive, humorous core. Previous seasons of Hacks have welcomed an eclectic mix of guest stars; some more prominent than others. Just as season 3 boasted a variety of high-profile cameos, season 4 is planning to continue this trend, with even more star-studded appearances anticipated in its latter episodes.

14. Michaela Watkins As Stacey

In the fourth season of Hacks, Michaela Watkins takes on the role of Stacey, an HR representative at the TV station hosting Deborah’s late-night show. Due to their continuous disagreement, Stacey is required to be present during all discussions between Deborah and Ava. The network has grown concerned about their feud. Watkins portrays Stacey as amusingly awkward and detached, yet she possesses a firm grasp of professional office etiquette. Michaela Watkins is renowned for her work in Saturday Night Live, Casual, Search Party, and The Back-up Plan.

13. Helen Hunt As Winnie Landell

Episodes 1, 2, 4

Helene Hunt, who has previously won an Oscar, returns to portray Winnie Landell, the no-nonsense executive atop a television network, in season 3 of “Hacks.” Winnie is single-mindedly focused on ensuring that Deborah’s late-night show thrives. In the course of season 3, Jimmy and Kayla find themselves within her inner circle, primarily through a pickleball game with Winnie. This interaction ultimately sparks Winnie’s idea for Deborah to host a late-night talk show. Hunt is well-known for winning Best Actress for “As Good as It Gets” and also garnering four Emmy Awards for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on “Mad About You.

12. Tony Goldwyn As Bob Lipka

Tony Goldwyn reprises his role as the head of a media conglomerate, Bob Lipka, who operates the TV network where Deborah’s late-night show is broadcast. In the third season of Hacks, he made an appearance and had a one-night stand with Deborah, despite being married at the time. Ava exploits this indiscretion to secure the head writer position by threatening Deborah with it. Goldwyn has so far only appeared in the first episode of Hacks season 4. Throughout his career, he has acted in numerous films and TV shows such as Ghost, The 6th Day, The Last Samurai, and The Mechanic.

In the opening episode of Hacks season 4, I was fortunate enough to make a brief appearance as myself, joining an esteemed group of real-life industry insiders and journalistic figures. Among this distinguished company were Michael Schneider and Kate Aurthur from Variety, Danny Directo of Entertainment Tonight, and Stacey Wilson Hunt from The Hollywood Reporter. Our presence in the series lends a touch of authenticity to Deborah’s high-profile status within the show’s narrative, despite the fact that we are all non-actors by trade.

10. Polly Draper As Diana

Episodes 2 & 4

In the second season, Polly Draper reappears, this time portraying Diana, Deborah’s psychic confidante. Her mission is to cleanse the energy of Deborah’s writing studio, a place she jokingly remarks is populated by “divorced, middle-aged men“. Although Draper plays a more substantial part in episode 2 of season 4 of ‘Hacks’, she also makes a brief cameo in episode 4. Here, she is among the numerous individuals offering Deborah encouragement as she prepares to step onto the stage for her inaugural live taping of her late-night program. Polly Draper is recognized primarily for her roles in ‘Shiva Baby’ and ‘The Naked Brothers Band’.

9. Robby Hoffman As Randi

Robby Hoffman is set to join the cast of “Hacks” season 4, stepping into the role of Randi, a new assistant for characters Kayla and Jimmy. Previously seen in season 2, Randi informs Jimmy that she lacks experience in Hollywood. It’s worth noting that Hoffman is predominantly known for her writing and comedic skills, having contributed to children’s shows like Odd Squad, as well as “Workin’ Moms,” “The Chris Gethard Show,” and her own stand-up comedy special titled “I’m Nervous.” Recently, she also made an appearance in an episode of Hulu’s “Dying for Sex.

8. Lindsey Normington As Cherry

Lindsey Normington, known for her role in the Best Picture-winning film “Anora,” takes on a new character in season 4, episode 3 of “Hacks.” She portrays Ani’s envious nightclub colleague, Diamond, in Sean Baker’s award-winning movie. Previously, Normington was seen in HBO’s “The Idol” and the TV show “Blindspotting,” where she played a dancer. In “Hacks,” her character, Cherry, delivers a humorous lap dance to Deborah.

7. Poppy Liu As Kiki

In the fourth season of Hacks, Poppy Liu reprises her role as Kiki. She first made an appearance in one episode during season 3, but she was initially a recurring character in season 1 when the show primarily focused on Vegas, where she worked as a dealer at a casino. Out of the ten episodes in season 1, Liu starred in six. Since then, she has been seen in four Hacks episodes across seasons 2-4, with her most recent appearance being in season 4, episode 3. Additionally, Liu has featured in the shows No Good Deed, Space Cadet, and Dead Ringers.

6. Luenell As Miss Loretta

In the popular series “Hacks,” the character Miss Loretta, portrayed by Luenell, is a regular figure who has made an appearance in every season. She’s not just any character; she’s a good friend of Marcus’s mother (played by Angela Elayne Gibbs), often seen at Marcus’s home. Interestingly, Loretta turns up unexpectedly at the nightclub where Deborah takes Ava and her team after a night out. Luenell is well-known for her roles in films such as “The Rock,” “That’s My Boy,” “A Star Is Born,” and “All About Steve.

5. Lauren Weedman As Mayor Jo

In the fourth season, episode 3, Lauren Weedman once again takes on the character of Mayor Jo, the mayor of Las Vegas from ‘Hacks’. This time around, she steps in to help Deborah avoid a speeding and DUI predicament, despite being under the influence herself. Interestingly, Weedman has been a constant presence since the very first episode of season 1. She is most renowned for her performances in films such as ‘Date Night’, ‘The Five-Year Engagement’, and ‘Looking’.

4. Carol Burnett As Herself

In the fourth season, fourth episode of Hacks, the esteemed actress, comedian, writer, and host, Carol Burnett, makes her debut. She portrays herself, sharing a significant conversation with Deborah at the same doctor’s office. Both women, one fictional, are trailblazers who paved the way for women in Hollywood and comedy.

In a career highlight, Carol Burnett captivated audiences with her own variety/sketch show, “The Carol Burnett Show,” that ran from 1967 to 1978, opening doors for numerous women in the entertainment industry. Carol offers Deborah some sage advice: deliver your monologue as if you’re speaking to just one person in the audience.

3. Merrill Markoe As Herself

Merrill Markoe, another trailblazer in comedy, graces the screens of ‘Hacks’ season 4, episode 4 as Deborah embarks on her late-night show. As depicted in the ‘Hacks’ episode, Markoe served as the head writer for ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ from 1982 to 1986, a role that netted her three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program and catapulted Letterman into national fame. Markoe humorously declines Ava’s job in ‘Hacks’, despite the fact she held a similar position in the 1980s.

In the fourth episode of season 4, TikTok sensation Jake Shane momentarily graces the screen on Hacks, taking on the role of the TV network’s social media correspondent. As Deborah heads towards the stage for her initial live broadcast, he requests a couple of snapshots. Notably, Jake Shane is recognized as a prominent figure in social media and comedy on the internet, securing his first acting gig with Hacks.

1. Randy Newman As Himself

Episode 4

Known for his exceptional skills as a singer, songwriter, and composer, Randy Newman is renowned for penning original soundtracks for numerous films and TV series, such as “Toy Story,” “Marriage Story,” “Cars,” “Monk,” “Meet the Parents,” among others. Although his acting roles are limited, he made a notable appearance in the Oscar-winning film “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” playing the character Raccacoonie. In the series “Hacks,” Newman humorously refuses Deborah’s dinner invitation after performing on her first late-night show, stating that he hasn’t dined in public for many decades while playing the piano.
