Josh Duhamel’s Doomsday Cabin: 40 Miles from Civilization
Josh Duhamel lives in a ‘doomsday cabin‘ in the woods of Minnesota.
This week, the 52-year-old actor invited Country Living inside his self-built home, which he constructed using his own skills and labor.
The action occurred much earlier, prior to him portraying stoic Staten Kirkland in Netflix’s popular show titled Ransom Canyon.
Nestled on a peaceful, sprawling 26-acre land beside a picturesque little lake, you’ll find the charming, snug cabin. This idyllic retreat lies approximately two miles off the main road. A scenic one-hour journey takes you to Fargo from here.
Josh shared with the magazine, ‘We’re roughly 40 minutes away from urban areas.’ He continued, ‘Reaching this place is always a relief. Then, you delve further into the woods beyond it,'”
This version maintains the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language.
Building the home came out of passion for a simpler life.
Over the course of fifteen years, he has worked diligently to develop our lakefront land—constructing buildings, removing tree stumps, installing wells, and creating areas for growing crops. He enthusiastically discussed his efforts with us.

He mentioned that for the initial 12 years, we were essentially living off the land without modern conveniences like indoor plumbing.
Previously, we relied on outhouses for our necessities and washed dishes in the lake. However, more recently, Josh has improved things by adding new facilities.
He stated, “This place feels like an extension of myself – I didn’t merely purchase it; I molded it to be what it is today. Despite the many upgrades we’ve made, there’s still a sense of ruggedness here, and I find that charming.
I can’t help but gush over this quaint, petite red cottage nestled by the water, it’s as if I’ve stepped into one of Terry Redlin’s masterpieces!”, said I (Josh), captivated by its charm.
His kids adore this place: “It allows our young ones to truly act like children, exploring nature by catching frogs or gathering sticks. By the time they return home, they’re dirty, and I find that incredibly beneficial for them.
Currently, it seems like there’s an overwhelming amount of anger present globally, and I believe this stems from people spending too much time on their phones, immersed in whatever content their devices provide, rather than engaging with the physical world and nature. Interacting with nature often provides a sense of perspective and reminds us about what truly matters.
He resides in Minnesota alongside his spouse Audra Mari (aged 31) and their 16-month-old child named Shepherd. Additionally, he co-parents an 11-year-old boy called Axl with his former partner.
Josh gave a tour of his compound when on In Depth With Graham Bensinger.

He shared that a major factor for constructing his home in the heart of Minnesota’s wilderness was because it offers solitude, being far away from all the hustle and bustle.
He continued, “It brought me right back into connection with something,” and he explained, “There’s an essence about it that nourishes the spirit in various ways.
Living a more secluded lifestyle, as expressed by the star of “The Shotgun Wedding,” enables him and his loved ones to prioritize their most significant values effectively.
The nearest shop lies approximately 40 miles from here. When we arrive, it becomes more about everyone looking out for one another – creating moments to cherish, bonding with family, and enjoying quality time with friends.
He continued: ‘You really get a chance to get back to the basics.
In your actions out there, you prioritize enjoyment over being overwhelmed by various diversions. It’s essential for you to ensure everyone stays comfortable, well-fed, and hydrated.
Raised amidst the vast open spaces of North Dakota, where he was naturally inclined to the wilderness, the actor remarked, ‘I’m usually busy exploring or playing around. It feels like a gigantic playground to me.’
He also spoke about how he wants to raise his sons the same way.

In simple terms, the father mentioned that his oldest son, Axl, will always remember this location. He also pointed out that Axl isn’t usually found using his iPad when he is outside.
He could be accompanying me in the boat, or he might be playing soccer on the beach, or else he’s off in the woods, engaging in activities similar to mine.
He continued: ‘And then I have a little baby who’s going to experience the same thing.
One day, I aspire to hand down this to them, so they can pass it along to their children. It holds significant value for me, and I want them to possess it.
Instead of focusing solely on possessions and comfort, what truly matters is building strong family bonds. It’s about leaving a lasting impact, a legacy behind.
