Shannon Sharpe temporarily steps away from ESPN after ex-girlfriend’s $50-million rape lawsuit

In my own words, I’d say: “I, as a great admirer, have to share that Shannon Sharpe has taken a temporary break from his ESPN responsibilities, following a lawsuit filed four days ago by a woman. This lawsuit alleges that Mr. Sharpe, a prominent figure on ‘First Take’, raped her during their two-year relationship.

The legal action, initiated on a Sunday in Clark County, Nevada, is aimed at securing compensation for accusations that include assault, sexual assault, battery, sexual battery, and intentional emotional harm. It also alleges numerous instances of non-consensual sexual encounters within the individual’s Las Vegas apartment, occurring between October and January.

In a statement shared on both Twitter and Instagram on the day prior to the NFL draft, Sharpe clarified that the relationship under discussion was entirely consensual. However, he has chosen to take a temporary break from his responsibilities at ESPN.

I’m going to spend this period focusing on my loved ones while addressing and handling untrue and disturbing accusations leveled against me. I intend to rejoin ESPN once the NFL season begins.

Former NFL legend Shannon Sharpe stands charged with rape, as alleged in a lawsuit brought forth by an ex-partner in Nevada courts. The woman is asking for $50 million in compensation as a result of these accusations.

A representative from ESPN stated via email to The Times, “This is a significant matter, and we support Shannon’s choice to take a break.

Initially responding to accusations through a video shared on Instagram on Tuesday, Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Sharpe referred to the lawsuit as an attempt for extortion, or a “shakedown.” Both legal teams have confirmed that prior to the filing of the lawsuit, Sharpe proposed a settlement of at least $10 million during mediation. However, the accuser chose not to accept this offer.

56-year-old Sharpe debuted on “First Take” in August 2023, following the conclusion of his seven-year stint as co-host on FS1’s “Undisputed” alongside Skip Bayless in June 2024. Subsequently, he secured a multiyear contract with ESPN, which broadened his responsibilities not only on “First Take” but also across various ESPN programs.

Sharpe expressed that being a part of this family (referring to ESPN) has been a blessing for him. He cherishes his relationship with Stephen A. [Smith] on ‘First Take’, and everything related to it has been fantastic. He’s eager to broaden his responsibilities and exhibit more of his abilities to the world.

As a fan following their discussions, I’ve noticed they’ve been talking about a legal dispute involving a hairstylist and Skip Bayless, Joy Taylor, and Charlie Dixon – all formerly associated with Fox Sports.

In September, Sharpe found himself in a situation where he allegedly broadcasted audio of a private moment (implicitly sex) unintentionally on Instagram Live. Despite this occurrence, ESPN did not impose any public sanctions on him.

As an avid film buff who’s equally passionate about podcasting, I’ve got some exciting news to share. You might recognize me from shows like “Club Shay Shay” and “Nightcap”. Recently, it was announced by Front Office Sports that my media deal with the Volume podcast network has come to an end. However, the anticipation is high as I’m expected to ink a new deal that’s projected to surpass the $100 million mark!
