In a new take on the classic tale, director Dan Allen explains that his film, titled “Bambi: The Reckoning,” stays truer to the original story than Disney’s version. This horror movie reimagines the beloved character of Bambi as a vengeful deer seeking retribution after a tragic car accident takes the life of his mother. Starring Roxanne McKee, Nicole Wright, Tom Mulheron, Samira Mighty, and Russell Geoffrey Banks, “Bambi: The Reckoning” is based on a script adapted by Rhys Warrington from the Felix Salten novel.

In an interview with SFX Magazine, as reported by GamesRadar, Allen justifies his stance that Bambi: The Reckoning is a truer adaptation of the original story. He argues against labeling films like this as “childhood killers.” Instead, he describes his movie as thematically exploring the loss of innocence and the end of childhood. Consequently, Allen suggests that movies similar to these are more faithful than Disney films because Disney made their versions more digestible and friendly for younger viewers by toning down the darker aspects. Frequently, these movies are referred to as ‘murderers of childhood’, but I find that term rather exaggerated. However, when we delve into their storyline, many of them revolve around themes such as the loss of innocence and the end of childhood, which indeed aligns with their essence.

In my opinion, the adaptations are truer to the original stories compared to Disney films, particularly for Peter Pan and Bambi. While Winnie The Pooh remains lighthearted, these other tales were significantly darker in their origin. Disney softened them for younger viewers, making them friendlier and less intense. However, there’s still a touch of violence and disturbing elements, but not to the extent as Peter Pan. Instead, the focus is on the lead-up to these events, adding suspense, energy, and even destruction, while still maintaining an entertaining feel.

Allen draws upon the tale of Peter Pan in his quote. A chilling rendition titled Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare has been produced more recently, much like how Bambi: The Reckoning transformed a classic story famous for its 1953 adaptation into a horror narrative. This follows the trend of horror films, which includes the blockbuster hits such as Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and its sequel. The subgenre of mascot horrors capitalizes on the darker aspects often overlooked in children’s literature adaptations, as demonstrated by Bambi: The Reckoning.

Allen correctly notes that the underlying content in many stories can be quite grim, with even beloved children’s movies like Bambi containing somber themes. For instance, the main character, Bambi, has to endure the loss of his mother at the hands of a hunter, a harsh reality that forces him to mature prematurely – a theme not typically associated with light-hearted animated films. Similarly, The Little Mermaid, while popular as an animated feature, was notably toned down from its original source text. In contrast, Allen and his team chose to emphasize the more somber aspects of Bambi, transforming it into a film that falls within the horror genre.

On the other hand, movies like “Bambi: The Reckoning” are more faithful adaptations as they stick closer to the adult themes found in other mascot texts, such as the Steamboat Willie horror film “Screamboat“.
