Ludwig Godefroy’s Casa Soskil Merges Indoor and Outdoor Living

Architect Ludwig Godefroy has crafted Casa Soskil, an architectural endeavor that challenges conventional aesthetics. Situated amidst the lively and culturally rich Mérida city in Mexico, this house emphasizes open spaces over structure, offering a unique design perspective. Much like Casa Mérida, it boasts a distinctive concrete construction.

Rather than focusing on inhabited spaces as its foundation, Casa Soskil was initially imagined around the open void that defines its garden. This garden area serves as the primary element, encompassing and harmonizing the house with its internal spaces, while influencing the overall structure. The site organically separates into two distinct zones: one bathed in light, featuring intense sunlight at the front, and another shaded region where the tree canopies diffuse light towards the back. The dwelling embraces these contrasting environments, effortlessly incorporating the unique traits of the site into its design.

House Soskil differentiates its areas by establishing a bright social zone towards the front, centered on a terrace, solarium, and swimming pool. On the other hand, the back area is more secluded, offering quiet spots like a study, a relaxing daybed room, and a fire pit under shade. By adopting these contrasting elements, the project challenges traditional designs, converting the ground floor and garden into one expansive open living space. The bedrooms are thoughtfully placed among the trees, giving an illusion of treehouses perched high up.

House Soskil blurs the line between indoor and outdoor environments, making the garden the main living area. Extending from the front door to the back wall, every corner of the property, even the existing trees, significantly contribute to the lifestyle. This architectural style transforms the traditional idea of a house with a garden into a garden that contains a house.
