You

In season 1 of the Netflix show “You”, Guinevere Beck isn’t just one of Joe Goldberg’s past victims, she’s the main character whose death remains a significant part of the storyline throughout the series. As suggested by the trailer for season 5, it seems that the show will revisit Joe’s past, particularly his history with Beck, as he goes back to New York. It’s appropriate that as Joe returns to where the series began, the focus is once again on his long line of victims, and some viewers may have forgotten the details of what happened to Beck.

In the final episode of season 1, it’s heartbreakingly clear that Beck had a chance to evade her grim fate at the hands of Joe Goldberg, but ultimately didn’t. Although the moment when Joe imprisoned her in his glass box is undoubtedly the most shocking turn of events, it’s not how Beck ultimately perishes. She almost manages to escape, but unfortunately, Joe manages to maintain control over the situation. Moreover, he devises a simple plan to pin her murder on someone else, thus escaping any repercussions for her death.

Guinevere Beck’s You Season 1 Death Explained: Why & How Joe Goldberg Kills Her

The Finale Doesn’t Show Beck’s Death On-Screen

In the final episode of season 1, titled “Bluebeard’s Castle,” we find Beck imprisoned within Joe Goldberg’s confinement. This dramatic turn is a culmination of events that have been unfolding throughout the series. After knocking her out in the last episode, Joe did so when Beck uncovered a box of keepsakes hidden in his bathroom ceiling. These items provided irrefutable evidence of Joe stalking her and implicated him in the disappearances of Benji and Peach. It’s not hard to understand why these discoveries would unsettle Beck. Recognizing her distress, Joe then renders her unconscious and confines her in the basement of Mooney’s bookstore.

In a surprising turn of events, Beck doesn’t perish in the cage; instead, she discovers an escape route, albeit leading to another sorrowful conclusion later. In the opera “Bluebeard’s Castle,” Beck skillfully persuades Joe that her affection for him remains intact, causing him to unlock the cage and embrace her. However, once he does so, she swipes the key from his pocket and confines him within the glass box instead. Regrettably, Beck can’t find the key to exit the room leading back to Mooney’s. Meanwhile, Paco doesn’t respond to her pleas for aid, as Joe had already saved him by ending the life of the man who was abusing his mother.

When Beck re-enters the basement to grab the second key, she discovers that Joe is no longer imprisoned. Using a hidden spare key in the cage, he attacks Beck once more. Despite hitting him with a hammer, Beck can’t escape Mooney’s basement. Since she didn’t deliver a fatal blow, Joe regains consciousness and seizes her. The Netflix series doesn’t explicitly show how she dies; it skips ahead four months to inform us that she’s deceased. However, in Caroline Kepnes’ book, Joe strangles her to death.

It seems highly probable that Beck meets a gruesome end, possibly due to strangulation or blunt force trauma, as depicted by the intense way Joe grips her in the Netflix series. Although the show doesn’t explicitly show Beck’s demise, it’s reasonable to assume that after she confesses she can never love him, Joe is unlikely to let her go free and resort to extreme measures. Instead, it appears they have a violent altercation leading to Beck’s unfortunate passing.

How Joe Goldberg Frames Beck’s Therapist For Her Murder

The Story Beck Writes To Get Free Is What Incriminates Dr. Nicky

Following Beck’s death, Joe Goldberg falsely implicates her therapist, Dr. Nicky, for the murder. Tragically, Beck facilitates this deceit by persuading Joe to release her, promising him his own freedom in return. With a private investigator closing in on the truth about Peach, Joe is already in a precarious position. When he leaves a typewriter within the cage and asks Beck to write, she pens a tale about Dr. Nicky, suggesting they could accuse him of killing Peach.

In season 1, episode 9, it is revealed that Beck and Dr. Nicky are having an affair, which lends credibility to some parts of Beck’s story. However, she manipulates this truth to create a lie. It’s unclear if Beck intends for her actions to frame her therapist, as she seems to want to imprison Joe and escape. In the event of her death, the words she writes make it simple for Joe to twist the circumstances surrounding her demise in his favor. By sharing her manuscript, he secures his ability to avoid prosecution – even if some individuals, like the Salingers’ private investigator, remain skeptical of his innocence.

Why Joe Publishes Beck’s Book At The End Of You Season 1

It’s Partly To Frame Dr. Nicky & Partly A Twisted Expression Of Joe’s Obsession

Viewers learn about Beck’s demise while Mooney is stocking her book, which Joe decides to submit for publication posthumously. His primary intention behind this is to bolster his narrative, specifically by framing Dr. Nicky as the killer of Beck, thus shifting any scrutiny away from himself. Yet, it’s not solely this motive that drives Joe in getting Beck’s book published. The final monologue in season 1 of ‘You’ suggests that his actions are a warped way to pay tribute to her, as writing was Beck’s dream and ambition.

Instead of merely exposing Dr. Nicky with incriminating words, Joe chooses to publish Beck’s other works as well. He does this to demonstrate his affection for her, although it’s more accurate to say that it’s an expression of Joe’s unhealthy obsession with Beck. Fulfilling Beck’s dream might help alleviate the guilt Joe feels after killing her, highlighting just how troubled and complex the main character in this story truly is.
