George Lucas’ Hidden Influence on Star Wars’ Best TV Show & Movie

In addition to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” being one of the top-notch Disney-produced “Star Wars” projects, it shares a common origin with another exceptional series, “Andor.” Notably, both works were inspired by an original concept from George Lucas. Distinctively, “Rogue One” left its mark among contemporary “Star Wars” films due to its grittier atmosphere, stunning visuals, unexpected narrative twists, and the introduction of compelling new characters. On the other hand, “Andor” is a remarkable series in every conceivable aspect, with no indications of this trend changing as we move into season 2.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I can’t help but marvel at how the creators behind Andor and Rogue One have managed to capture the essence that George Lucas envisioned for this galaxy far, far away. Though he may not have been keen on creating Episode VII himself, George was always open to exploring fresh narratives featuring diverse characters, particularly within the realm of television. In fact, some of his concepts for a live-action TV series ended up laying the groundwork for both Andor and Rogue One, making me feel like I’m witnessing Lucas’ dreams take flight on the small screen.

Saw Gerrera Was Originally Created For George Lucas’ Live-Action TV Show

Star Wars: Underworld was in development for many years

It’s fascinating to note that Saw Gerrera, who played a significant role in “Rogue One” and is also prominent in “Andor”, was actually intended by George Lucas from the start. During a 2016 episode of “The Star Wars Show”, it was disclosed that Lucas had initially conceived Saw Gerrera for “Star Wars: Underworld”, a live-action series he was planning. This proposed series would have delved into a darker narrative, following multiple characters, much like what “Andor” eventually evolved into.

Instead of moving forward with the Underworld series due to its high production costs, Lucas decided to postpone it indefinitely in 2010. To ensure that the character didn’t go unused, Saw made his debut in the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars during season 5, episode 2 “A War on Two Fronts.” In this series, he was part of the Onderon resistance, a group fighting against the corrupt king installed by the Separatists. This struggle took a heavy toll on Saw.

Andor & Rogue One Are Telling The Saw Gerrera Story Lucas Originally Planned

He debuted in animation but is finally in a live-action TV series

Initially, when Forest Whitaker’s character was unveiled as Saw Gerrera, I had my doubts due to his stark contrast with the animated version. Yet, it’s now clear to me that the live-action Saw likely represents Lucas’ original vision for the character. He has proven to be a compelling figure in both _Andor_ and _Rogue One_. Unlike other rebels in _Star Wars_, Saw was a grayer shade of what a resistance fighter might evolve into.

The Bad Batch and Star Wars Rebels, have effectively bridged the gap between Saw’s transformation in Clone Wars to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I’m eagerly anticipating how season 2 of Andor will continue this narrative arc by reintroducing Saw and his Partisans for further episodes. Regardless of what unfolds next, it’s gratifying to know that the most impressive modern Star Wars show and movie draw inspiration from George Lucas’ original ideas.
