Why Gareth Evans didn’t write Netflix’s Havoc with Tom Hardy in mind

As a gaming enthusiast, I was quite taken aback to discover that Gareth Evans didn’t pen Netflix’s “Havoc” with Tom Hardy in mind, despite the fact that their pairing in the project seems almost too perfect!

In this fast-paced, suspenseful drama, Hardy portrays Detective Walker, a character grappling with his own troubles, who stumbles upon a hidden plot as he is tasked with safeguarding the child of a corrupt political figure.

However, while penning the script for “Havoc”, Evans hadn’t specifically visualized anyone for the character of Walker. This was due to a compelling motive.

He advised Digital Spy that when crafting a character, it’s detrimental to write with someone specific in mind.

If not, it shapes the rhythm of the character in the movie. What I aim to achieve instead is encountering this individual for the first time and learning about their personality and how they act within the film’s universe.

Evans went on to say: “Through our collaboration, I’ve come to know Tom quite well, but prior to that, my knowledge of him was limited to a single encounter and his films. However, the Tom portrayed in those movies isn’t the same as Walker. Instead, it’s based on other characters he has played.

After finishing the script, we received a call from Tom’s representatives, who said, “Tom is open to this project.” We had been admiring each other’s work for some time, making it an ideal moment to share our material. Fortunately, Tom appreciated the script and showed interest.

Ultimately, it was a decision that proved beneficial, as you’ll notice when the series ‘Havoc’ becomes available on Netflix this coming Friday.

In the movie, even Justin Cornwell, who highly appreciates the performances, found a favorite scene that doesn’t directly feature Hardy. This indicates how exceptional Hardy’s performance was.

About the film he recently rewatched, it’s not the scene featuring his own role that caught his attention. Although he is in the movie at this part, he finds himself drawn to another area. Specifically, it’s the fight between Tom and Michelle Waterson. He shared this sentiment with Digital Spy.

To me, it’s incredibly dynamic. There’s a lot happening, and I find myself captivated by that particular part. It’s truly mind-blowing.

Prior to the movie’s premiere, Cornwell’s fellow actor, Quelin Sepulveda, too remembered the emotional scene they shared with Hardy, which left her finding it difficult to sleep after filming it.

Havoc is released on Netflix on 25 April.

The first print issue of Digital Spy’s magazine titled “British Comedy Legends” is available now! You can purchase it from your local newsstands or online for just £7.99.
