Penn Badgley Reveals Why Dating Blake Lively Was a ‘Struggle’

During the years 2007 through 2010, Penn Badgley, well-known for his role, dated Blake Lively, the leading actress from Gossip Girl. This romance coincided with their shared time on The CW show, making it challenging at times to distinguish between fiction and real life for him.

On Call Her Daddy this week, the 38-year-old Independent Spirit Award recipient openly admitted, “I went through a tough battle.

Over an extended period in that particular role, the celebrity aspect becomes a significant factor, and in my opinion, there’s often insufficient distinction between personal and professional life for anyone involved.

People recognize you as if they know you personally, often addressing you by your name while passing on the street. Similarly, you are expected to maintain that persona in a professional setting at work.

For six seasons between 2007 and 2012, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s critically praised television adaptation of Cecily von Ziegesar’s novel series portraying affluent Manhattan teenagers was broadcasted.

After the original series ended, a separate continuation named “Gossip Girl” aired again, and it ran for two seasons from 2021 to 2023 on Max.

Penn acknowledged that he lacked the ’emotional understanding to separate’ himself from his character, Dan Humphrey (Brooklyn scholarship student), in regards to personal value.

According to Badgley, born in Baltimore, it appeared that the opinion others had of Dan was similar to how they felt about me.

As a devoted fan, I found myself yearning for various forms of emotional closeness, a void left by my parents’ divorce. I deeply desired to establish a profound connection with the troubled character, portrayed by the 37-year-old actress who brought Serena van der Woodsen to life on Gossip Girl.

In 2009, Blake admitted to Glamour of Penn: “Initially, I was so angry that they hired him. I even tried to turn the entire cast against him. However, they soon recognized that he wasn’t a jerk but rather a genuinely kind and charming individual. It took me around a week to acknowledge this fact myself.

Currently, Lively (formerly known as Brown) is engaged in a legal dispute with Justin Baldoni, her co-star from the film “It Ends With Us”, who also shares a close friendship with Badgley.

In 2022 and 2023, the star of the show “You” has extended invitations for the 41-year-old filmmaker who shares the same Baha’i faith to appear as a guest on his podcast, Podcrushed.

In March 2026, Blake and Justin will go head-to-head at a sexual harassment and defamation trial in Manhattan’s U.S. District Court. However, it seems that public opinion has already leaned towards Baldoni prior to the trial.

In the meantime, Penn and his wife, Domino Kirke, who have been married for eight years, are planning to expand their family with twins due this coming summer. Their current four-year-old son, James, is looking forward to becoming an older brother.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I find myself privileged to be a stepfather figure to the vibrant 41-year-old vocalist’s lively 16-year-old son, Cassius O’Kane. This bond has blossomed from her significant relationship with the talented musician, Morgan O’Kane.

The individual, once a student at Lewis & Clark College and romantically linked with Zoe Kravitz’s Blink Twice director, initially encountered Domino at a meatball eatery in the year 2014.

Initially, our encounter was instinctive. Without a moment’s pause, I believe we both yearned for each other at a profound level.

In the tenth episode series finale of “You,” created by Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo, Badgley takes on both the role of producer and star, portraying serial killer Joe Goldberg, airing for the first time this coming Thursday on Netflix.

In addition to the small-screen version of Caroline Kepnes’ book series, actors like Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp, Griffin Matthews, Charlotte Ritchie, and Tati Gabrielle will also be part of the cast.
