In a groundbreaking collaboration, Dior’s latest capsule collection, spearheaded by Lewis Hamilton, delves into the realms of Afrofuturism. WWD was instrumental in breaking this news about the new product line. The union between the esteemed French fashion house and the Formula One champion was officially revealed last summer, with their first joint campaign making its grand entrance in October 2024.
After touring Africa, specifically Morocco, Senegal, Mozambique, Benin, and Madagascar last summer, Hamilton was moved by the breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural experiences he encountered. In a statement released to WWD, he stated, “The tales I heard were captivating, fueling my thoughts about the evolution of Black culture. The manner in which we convey narratives through art, science, and philosophy is truly unique. Witnessing these concepts materialize through color and motion sparked my imagination.” The concept of “afrofuturism” ties into science fiction and the expression of afrofuturist styles in popular culture over the last ten years.
Dior recently announced comments about Hamilton’s new collection, stating that it showcases another facet of his athletic journey, unveiling a more intimate side. The line aims to celebrate performance, superiority, and innovation while showcasing exceptional sustainability achievements. Hamilton collaborated with the Dior workshops to create a one-of-a-kind assortment by blending the raw power and excitement of motorsports with the refined skill of French and global craftsmanship.
In my perspective as a fan, this lineup showcases a bold leopard-pattern tweed that gracefully adorns laid-back shorts, shirts, a hoodie jacket, and a bouson. This print symbolizes the intriguing intersection of “afrofuturism and Dior’s rich history,” as the brand describes it.
Hamilton’s unique fashion sensibilities blend loose tailoring with rugged work boots and a bucket hat. As one of the upcoming Met Gala co-chairs, Hamilton views style as a form of self-expression and encouragement to embrace all aspects of one’s identity. He expressed, “Fashion is about expressing yourself authentically and embracing every part of you. Being true to your style and communicating that through clothing is such a potent sensation.” He continued, “This collection embodies an exploration of identity, adaptability, and self-expression.
Take a look at the capsule collection above. The collection releases in stores on July 3.
