Outlander Fans Devastated as Tobias Menzies Confirms He Won’t Return for Final Season!

The upcoming eighth season of “Outlander” could have offered a chance for a specific actor to rejoin the show, but it seems unlikely that will happen. As the final season, season 8 promises to conclude the tales of Jamie, Claire, and their family, making for an exhilarating swan song. The creators have hinted at resolving some of the series’ most intriguing long-term mysteries. Additionally, the last seasons of extended shows often provide a platform for beloved characters to make guest appearances, assuming the actors are available for return.

Claire’s journey began on the screen in ‘Outlander’ during its first season premiere in 2014, and since then, many characters have entered and exited Jamie and Claire’s lives. It’s possible that some of these characters might reappear in ‘Outlander’ for its eighth season. Reports suggest that Fergus and Marsali (played by César Domboy and Lauren Lyle) could be among those returning for the final episodes, given their role as perscribed in Diana Gabaldon’s books. However, another character from ‘Outlander’, who arguably should feature, seems unlikely to make an appearance.

Tobias Menzies Has Said He Won’t Return For Outlander’s Final Season

There’s Little Hope That We Will See Frank Or Black Jack Again

In the early seasons of “Outlander,” Tobias Menzies played two crucial characters: Frank Randall and his ancestor, Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall. Since both characters met their end several seasons back, Menzies has not been a recurring cast member on the show for quite some time. Yet, considering how instrumental Frank was in launching Claire’s journey, it seems fitting that he could make an appearance in the eighth season. The books have opened up a chance to reintroduce him through flashback sequences. However, Menzies himself has stated that he won’t be returning for any future filming.

Before the debut of Outlander season 7, Menzies made it clear he had no intentions of appearing in any additional episodes of the romantic series, stating “It would be wonderful [but] no, you won’t see me.” Although Black Jack Randall crossed paths with Roger and Buck in the 18th century books, Menzies did not reprise his role for this storyline in season 7. It appears that the actor is sincere about not making a cameo appearance in the remaining episodes of Outlander, but it doesn’t rule out the possibility that Frank’s influence on the Frasers’ tale may still be relevant.

Outlander Season 8 Can Still Include Frank’s Involvement In The Frasers’ Story

Frank Has Influence From Beyond The Grave

In the upcoming season 8 of “Outlander”, the storyline will be heavily influenced by the novel “Go Tell the Bees That I’m Gone”. The narrative revolves around Jamie, Claire, Brianna, Roger, and their extended family as they establish themselves at Fraser’s Ridge in North Carolina. As Diana Gabaldon has penned it, Brianna comes across a book from the future which provides insights into Scotland’s role during the Revolutionary War. Interestingly, this book was authored by none other than Brianna’s adoptive father, Frank Randall. Remarkably, within the pages of this book, Jamie Fraser is mentioned by name, with Frank noting that he had perished in the Battle of King’s Mountain. This mention appears to align with a warning note from Frank to Brianna about potential peril she might encounter in the 20th century.

In the seventh season of Outlander, a glimpse of Frank’s book suggested that his role would be significant in upcoming episodes. I had anticipated that author Duncan Menzies would reappear in season 8 to fully develop this narrative. The fact that Frank continues to watch over Brianna from the afterlife adds depth, and the insights he left her about her biological father can be seen as a blessing. It would have been more impactful if Outlander season 8 had included some flashback scenes showing all the efforts Frank made for Brianna. Unfortunately, the upcoming episodes may only acknowledge Frank’s involvement instead.

What Frank’s Story Could Mean For Claire & Brianna’s Outlander Ending

Frank Can Help Bring Their Stories Full Circle

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d rephrase it this way: In his book about the Revolutionary War, Frank hints at Jamie’s demise, which becomes a chilling prediction for Claire and Brianna in the Outlander series. Despite this ominous warning, Jamie decides to join the Battle of King’s Mountain. However, it is Claire who manages to find and rescue her husband’s body, thus completing a strange circle in her story. This poignant twist would undoubtedly resonate deeply in season 8 of Outlander. Despite their strained relationship before his passing, the fact that Frank left behind clues about Jamie’s survival serves as a testament to his love and understanding of Claire’s extraordinary journey through time.

In a similar vein, Frank intentionally left clues about Jamie for Brianna to discover was his method of expressing it was alright for her to seek out her biological father. Given that he may have anticipated an untimely end, Frank took steps to help Claire and Brianna navigate through time to the man who deeply cared for them. I would have been thrilled to witness this unfold in Outlander’s eighth season, but I am disheartened that Menzies won’t be there to bring it to life. Nevertheless, a tender scene where Claire and Jamie understand the sacrifice Frank made for them would suffice.
