Summer movies at Hollywood Forever begin with ‘Clueless,’ a David Lynch tribute and more
This year, starting over Memorial Day weekend on May 24th, the 24th annual outdoor movie series at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, known as Cinespia, will kick off with a screening of “The Big Lebowski.
On the following evening, there will be a 30th anniversary showing of “Clueless,” which will be followed by a screening of “Blue Velvet” on May 31st, honoring the late director David Lynch, who passed away in January.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Cinespia, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, is now offering tickets for their summer series! Although the complete schedule hasn’t been disclosed yet, historically, they screen approximately 30 films annually at Hollywood Forever and other venues such as the Greek Theatre and Los Angeles Historic Park. The film festivities usually wind down around Halloween.
At Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a place where renowned film and music personalities like Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Johnny Ramone rest in peace, movies are screened against a mausoleum backdrop. Visitors enjoy the show from the Fairbanks Lawn (an open, grave-free space), while some even lounge comfortably. Typical movie nights offer DJ performances before and after the screening, as well as free photo booths that mimic iconic film scenes.

Navid Sinaki serves as the Creative Director for Cinespia, based in Hollywood Forever. Besides this role, he is a published writer. In an open discussion, he shares insights into his upbringing, which was marked by being quiet, identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community, and having Persian heritage.
At Hollywood Forever, the Cinespia events usually charge $29.99 per adult ticket and can host up to 4,000 attendees. These guests are welcome to bring their own picnic items such as blankets, food, drinks (including alcohol like beer and wine). The venue also offers concession stands and a bar selling beer and wine. Parking costs between $24 and $36 on event nights.
In 2002, the Cinespia organization made its debut by hosting their initial outdoor movie screening at a cemetery, featuring the 1951 thriller “Strangers on a Train” directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
1998’s “The Big Lebowski,” featuring Jeff Bridges, was a film helmed by directors Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. On the other hand, “Clueless” (1995), a humorous teen flick, boasted Alicia Silverstone in the lead role and was directed by Amy Heckerling. Lastly, “Blue Velvet” (1986) was penned and directed by David Lynch, with Kyle MacLachan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper, and Laura Dern gracing the cast.
