Roy Thomas Baker, record producer behind Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ dies at 78
Roy Thomas Baker, the renowned music producer who crafted some of the most iconic and meticulously finished rock songs and albums, including Queen’s groundbreaking, multifaceted hit “Bohemian Rhapsody“, passed away on April 12 at his home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He was 78 years old.
The passing of the individual was communicated by representative Bob Merlis, who noted that the reason for it remains undetermined at this time.
Baker, renowned for his expertise in technology and studio discipline, played a crucial role in the production of Queen’s first four albums during the early 70s. These albums produced an eclectic mix of singles such as “Killer Queen,” a lively tune, “You’re My Best Friend,” a heartfelt ballad, and the intricate and humorous “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This six-minute long song transitions from a musical theater-style introduction to an operatic segment filled with complex arrangements, culminating in a hard rock section that became the basis for a popular headbanging scene in the 1992 film “Wayne’s World.

In an interview with Mix magazine back in 1999, Baker described “Bohemian Rhapsody” as a wild and entertaining piece that they couldn’t get enough of. He jokingly referred to it as a successful joke. The song climbed to the top of the U.K. singles chart in 1975 and later reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 following the release of “Wayne’s World.” In 2018, the film titled “Bohemian Rhapsody” hit theaters as a blockbuster biopic about Queen’s eccentric lead vocalist, Freddie Mercury. On Spotify, this iconic song has been played over 2.7 billion times.
In a remarkably tight artistic bond, Baker collaborated with the Cars, for whom he produced their initial four albums; these collaborations resulted in some of the shining new wave classics like “Just What I Needed,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Let’s Go” and “Shake It Up.” Notably, he also worked with a variety of other acts such as Journey, Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Devo, and Ozzy Osbourne. In 1978, he reconnected with Queen to create the album “Jazz.

Music
After being diagnosed with cancer, the veteran rock group postponed their tour last year. Now, they’re planning on picking it up again.
1946 saw the birth of Baker in Hampstead, London, on the 10th of November. He kick-started his music career as a secondary engineer at renowned studios Decca Studios and Trident Studios in London. During this time, he collaborated with producers such as Gus Dudgeon and Tony Visconti, contributing to albums by artists like David Bowie, the Who, and the Rolling Stones.
In the late ’70s, he relocated to Los Angeles and eventually took on a role as an A&R representative for Elektra Records. Through this position, he played a key part in signing acts such as Metallica and 10,000 Maniacs to the label. During the late ’90s and early 2000s, his career expanded into producing albums for bands like Local H, the Smashing Pumpkins, and the Darkness. Baker is mourned by his wife, Tere Livrano Baker, and his brother, Alan Baker.

Mix asked about Baker’s thoughts on artists producing their own records without involving producers. Baker likened this choice to an individual trying to act as their own lawyer during a court case, and he cautioned against such a move.
He suggested: “Even if you’re a talented artist who also produces music and excel at collaborating with others, it’s essential not to produce your own work. This is because having someone else present ensures that you bring out the best in yourself, as you can’t be in two places simultaneously.
