Chronicle Heads to Max
The 2012 found footage film, has found itself a new streaming home.
On May 1st, both Chronicle and its Director’s Cut will be available on Max. This found-footage superhero movie marked Josh Trank’s directorial debut, featuring Michael B. Jordan as the renowned Steve Montgomery. The film also showcased Dane DeHaan as Andrew Detmer, a victim of bullying, and Alex Russell as Matt Garrett, Andrew’s cousin. Chronicle first hit theaters on February 3rd, 2012, and proved to be a commercial success with a global gross of $126.6 million against a production budget of $15 million. It was also critically acclaimed, boasting an impressive 85% approval rating among 184 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The narrative unfolds around three high school seniors who form an unbreakable bond when they discover telekinetic abilities within an underground cavern. This tale is primarily narrated via Andrew’s video journal, capturing his daily experiences. “Chronicle” skillfully blends elements of a coming-of-age film with those of a superhero movie, as Andrew grapples with insecurities, bullying, his father’s alcoholism, and his mother’s fight against cancer. What sets “Chronicle” apart from other superhero films is its unique storyline that offers a more authentic portrayal of real-world struggles.
Will Chronicle Ever Recieve a Sequel?
Although Chronicle achieved both box office and critical acclaim, producer John Davis revealed in 2021 that they are currently developing Chronicle 2. Davis shared, “We’re working on it at Fox. It will provide us an opportunity to narrate the story from a different angle. This time, we’ll be telling it from a female perspective.
The storyline, as Davis explained, revolves around an event that took place in Seattle ten years ago, focusing on the themes of false news, truth, and cover-ups. What makes it intriguing is that the young women who possess corruptive powers are members of the next generation, having just graduated from college. They are empowered individuals, and this narrative follows their journey. Indeed, this offers a fresh and captivating tale to be told. These young women, having recently completed their college education, are empowered; this is their story. What an exciting and unique storyline this promises!
Regrettably, there’s been no news regarding the progress of “Chronicle 2” since its initial announcement, and past attempts to create a sequel prior to Disney acquiring Fox have not been successful. As it stands now, the fate of “Chronicle 2” remains uncertain.
Chronicle and its director’s cut will be available to stream on Max May 1st.
