Ice Cube Reveals the SHOCKING Reason ‘Friday’ Became a Cult Classic
When considering movie franchises, it’s probably common to picture superhero films or top-notch horror series. Yet, there are numerous long-lasting comedy franchise gems out there, such as Ice Cube‘s “Friday” film series. Interestingly, the multi-talented artist behind the character has shared his thoughts on why the “Friday” movies resonated so deeply with audiences.
The 1995 release “Friday” is hailed as one of the most hilarious ’90s comedies, and has since expanded into a popular franchise. For those with a Max subscription, the series can be streamed. As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of “Last Friday”, Ice Cube recently shared his thoughts on the enduring success of these movies in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. In his own words:
It seemed as if what we were engaged in was something that Hollywood might have overlooked in a certain sense. There exists a film titled CB4, which scrutinized the rap industry and hardcore hip-hop. We’ve had movies like Boyz n the Hood and Menace II Society, which portrayed gritty urban realities. However, unlike these films, we didn’t have a movie that humorously depicted our circumstances rather than eliciting tears.
It had never crossed my mind before, but this perspective is valid. Long before discussions on screen representation became popular, Friday was already presenting stories focused on Black characters in South Central, centered around comedy. This was quite different from most other projects at that time, and Ice suggests that this contrast might have been a significant factor behind the franchise’s success.
On Fridays, you can stream the entire collection at Max for as low as $9.99 per month, with potential savings of up to $41 on annual plans! Check out the deal now.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, let me tell you that “Friday” was a cinematic revolution. It’s no wonder fans are still clamoring for “Last Friday” to see the light of day. In a recent interview, Ice Cube reflected on the unique blend of comedy and drama in the 1996 movie, pointing out both its similarities and differences from other dramas of the same era. In his own words:
“Friday was a game-changer, much like how some films have a profound impact on the cinematic landscape. It’s no surprise that fans are still calling for ‘Last Friday’ to be made. The original movie had elements that resonated with drama films, but it also stood apart in its own unique way.
The essence of the statement could be rephrased as follows: “Let’s approach things playfully and find humor in them, instead of making it overly serious like a drama might suggest. This is because if we portrayed Friday as a dramatic event, it would be too heavy. However, by turning it into a comedy, we aimed to depict that our lives weren’t filled with unending misery, as some movies might imply. Instead, we wanted to convey that we found joy even in the craziness.
In theory, “Friday’s” narrative and key elements seem fitting for a dramatic film, given its focus on Craig and Smokey navigating life under the control of a local drug lord. However, the tense scenarios were humorously portrayed, leading to a chain of immensely popular comedic movies.
Previously noted, there could be another film featuring “Last Friday” added to the franchise. This upcoming project has been stuck in production limbo for quite some time now, but fans’ enthusiasm hasn’t waned one bit. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that this film will make it onto the 2025 movie calendar.
