Damian Lewis Reveals How He Handles Grief After Wife’s Death.

Damian Lewis discusses his methods for coping with grief, following the sad passing of his wife Helen McCrory from cancer in 2021.

Actor from Homeland, aged 54, stated: “There’s a commonly recognized psychological response to grief, or after any type of traumatic event, known as ‘the manic defense.’

He continued: ‘I have the manic defence in a very pronounced way, which is that you affirm life.

Pick yourself up, embrace life, keep going, and remind yourself of its worth.

Damian, who spent 14 years married to Helen and shares two teenage children with her, remarked: “Life should be seized and enjoyed.

When you have two kids, it’s crucial to ensure they understand life continues even in challenging times.

Actress Helen, known for her role in Peaky Blinders, passed away due to breast cancer in April 2021 at the age of 52. She chose to keep her illness private while still dedicating herself to her work.

At the time Damian admitted he felt ‘physically drained’ after Helen’s death.

After dedicating all his energy towards living the most fulfilling life with his wife, he admitted feeling utterly drained following her tragic demise.

He shared with The Guardian that for approximately four to five months, he felt physically depleted. For four and a half years, Helen experienced illness.

‘It’s often said that when you receive a potentially life-ending health diagnosis, that very moment marks the start of your grieving process.’

Currently, Damian is in a relationship with Alison Mosshart, whom he’s been seeing for about two years now. They were initially seen together in the summer of 2022.

In a heartfelt homage to Helen in The Times, Damian shared the traits that his children Manon, aged 18, and Gulliver, 16, have inherited from their mother, expressing the void her passing has created in their lives as he opened up about it.

He stated that she departed us prematurely, leaving behind our lovely kids, Manon and Gully. However, they were well-equipped for life prior to her departure.

They possess within them the bravery, intelligence, inquisitiveness, skill, and charm that mirror their mother. They’ve been encouraged by her to be brave and fearless.

She kept telling the kids, ‘Don’t feel sad, for I’ve had the life I desired, and now it’s time for me to move on.’

After Helen passed away, he expressed on social media that she encouraged him to seek love once more, saying she desired for him to have numerous romantic partners. He shared this sentiment with their son and daughter, implying that she wanted him to have many girlfriends.

I’ve been utterly captivated by her spirit. She lived boldly, fearlessly, and it’s a privilege to have her grace our lives. Her light shone so brilliantly, illuminating all around her. Now, dear one, ascend, float into the heavens.

46-year-old Alison, lead singer of The Kills since 2001, found romance the next year. It’s unclear how they crossed paths, but it was around the time he revealed his desire to delve deeper into music.

In June 2023, he launched his first album titled “Mission Creep,” finding a feeling of familiarity as the lyrics within it honored his deceased spouse.

Since then, he’s been back on the acting scene, reprising his role as Henry VIII in BBC’s Wolf Hall, which garnered him a third Emmy nomination and his fourth nod for a Golden Globe.

He is also set to star in a Second World War drama, Pressure, which follows the Normandy invasion.

Last year, I was fortunate enough to step into the shoes of the legendary Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, right there on the picturesque shores of Camber Sands beach in East Sussex. It felt as if time had warped, transporting me straight into the heart of World War II history!
