You Won’t Believe What Dave Bautista Was Doing 19 Years Ago!

Approximately twenty years ago, Dave Bautista first appeared as a superhero in a single episode of Smallville, introducing an original DC villain. Known previously as a WWE champion, Dave Bautista quickly moved into the film industry, landing a significant role alongside James Gunn in The Guardians of the Galaxy. In this series, the ex-wrestler brought to life Drax the Destroyer, a character known for his strength, humor, and tender heart. Since then, Dave Bautista has amassed an impressive filmography that includes Army of the Dead, Dune, Knock at the Cabin, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in the MCU.

Over the course of its ten seasons and a decade, the TV show “Smallville” introduced numerous characters who don’t appear in comic books. Characters like Chloe Sullivan, Lionel Luthor, Tina Greer, Jason Teague, and Alicia Baker were exclusively created for this series. Although the show included well-known DC Comics villains such as Metallo, General Zod, and Doomsday, and heroes like Cyborg, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter, it primarily focused on creating different sources of conflict. To add excitement, “Smallville” occasionally staged brief confrontations between Clark Kent and unanticipated adversaries.

Dave Bautista Appeared In The Smallville Season 6 Episode “Static”

Dave Bautista Made His Proper Acting Debut In Smallville

In 2006, Dave Bautista made his debut as an unnamed wrestler in the comedy “Relative Strangers,” but didn’t receive any credit for it. However, that same year, he earned his first official acting credit in the television series “Smallville” (season 6, episode 8, titled “Static”). In this episode, Bautista played Aldar, a Phantom Zone supervillain who gruesomely killed a group of construction workers by tearing out their bones and eating their marrow. Despite these terrifying actions, neither Clark Kent’s powers nor the Crystal of El were enough to stop Aldar. Fortunately, Martian Manhunter appeared in time to save Clark and vanquish Aldar.

Following my stint in Smallville, I found myself taking on smaller roles in films like Werner Herzog’s My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, Wrong Side of Town, Chuck, and House of the Rising Sun. However, opportunities for bigger roles came my way with The Man with the Iron Fists and Riddick. Then, in 2014, I was thrilled to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Drax, a role that has since become a significant part of my career. My close friendship with James Gunn has led many to speculate about my potential involvement in his upcoming DC Universe projects. Given my past interest in portraying a DC character, it’s not unreasonable to imagine me reprising a role, twenty years after my debut as the Smallville villain Aldar.

Why Dave Bautista Was Credited As ‘Batista’ On Smallville

Dave Bautista Was Still Primarily Known As A Wrestling Star In 2006

Initially known by the moniker “Batista” in the wrestling world since 1999, Dave Bautista gained popularity with this nickname. In an interview with Uproxx, he disclosed that the Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) promotion company had actually coined the name “Batista”. According to him, they did this to make it a recognizable brand. He also mentioned that he was led to believe the change aimed to simplify his real name for global audiences, but later learned it was done so the company could claim ownership of the name.

Throughout his entire wrestling career, Bautista retained the surname “Batista”. In 2006, David Bautista was largely recognized for his WWE fame. As a result, his appearances in “Smallville” and the sitcom “Neighbours” capitalized on his wrestling popularity and the “Batista” persona that he no longer employs today. In other contexts outside of wrestling, David Bautista Jr., a shorter version of his birth name, is the one he goes by instead.
