MAJOR spoilers follow for The Last of Us season 2, episode 2.
Pedro Pascal, regarding the twist in the second episode of ‘The Last of Us’ season 2, expressed his feelings as: “I’m currently in a state of active denial.
In the episode named ‘Through the Valley’, the character Joel played by Pascal tragically met his end, leaving many spectators in a state of astonishment and disbelief.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pascal clarified that it wasn’t as if they had announced, “We’ll be killing your character at the start of Season 2.”
He added: “However, it had been agreed that it would remain faithful to the original story in a particular manner and that the primary and limiting responsibility was for Season 1. The question was simply about how and when this would be achieved.
In the referenced scene, it was Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, who fatally attacked Joel in retaliation. This act of violence occurred due to a tragic event from season 1: Joel ended up killing Abby’s father to protect Bella Ramsey’s Ellie.
Pascal expressed that he has been in a state of active denial regarding Joel’s passing,” he admitted. “As I grow older, I find myself increasingly sliding into denial about things ending. This realization becomes more profound with time.
Though I’m deeply connected with many people from that experience and yearn to meet them again in different settings, it won’t happen while I’m playing the character Joel on ‘The Last of Us’. Also, I don’t dwell on this thought often as it brings sadness.
It was intriguing to enter the room and observe the expressions on people’s faces. It wasn’t disgust, but sorrow.
During the HBO after-show, Ramsey also shared his feelings about Pascal’s departure, mentioning: “I knew Joel was going to perish, but when I encountered that part in the script, it filled me with dread … and I wept profusely. It was the first time I’ve cried from reading a written piece.
