Star Wars Creators Hint at Grogu Popcorn Bucket Tease

The universe created by George Lucas is still expanding rapidly with new content, and a major highlight of the three-day event was when The Mandalorian and Grogu stole the show in Japan. Although Jon Favreau shared many intriguing details, especially from the new footage seen by attendees, the screenwriter and director admitted that they have yet to decide on which popcorn containers will accompany the streaming series’ transition to cinemas. Favreau mentioned in an interview with Collider:

The question you asked is indeed intriguing and hasn’t been addressed yet… We haven’t discussed it thoroughly before. For instance, Star Wars was a significant part of our childhood, something we watched in theaters. After it left the big screen, all we had were the soundtracks and toys. When designing new items, we consider how they could be collectibles or toys. Additionally, we think about what items were never shown in the movies but were popular as collectibles or toys. The popcorn bucket has become quite trendy lately, so it’s an interesting concept to explore. I’m not sure though.

It seems undeniable that Grogu, with popcorn before him and a bucket serving as his pram, is indeed the star souvenir for the Star Wars franchise, according to Dave Filoni. This was stated during their conversation with Collider, where Filoni joined Favreau and Rosario Dawson. The adorable, Force-sensitive character who travels alongside Mando (Pedro Pascal) has undeniably captured the hearts of fans since his debut in Season 1 of the popular Disney+ series. This affection extends to the newest cast member as well.

Sigourney Weaver Has Made No Secret About Her Love for Grogu

In May 2024, it was announced that Sigourney Weaver was in discussions to be part of “The Mandalorian and Grogu”. This three-time Academy Award nominee (for her roles in “Aliens”, “Working Girl”, and “Gorillas in the Mist”) has openly expressed her affection for Grogu in interviews since joining the galactic adventure. During a visit to Star Wars Celebration in Japan, Weaver shared more about her adorable co-star with IGN. In an interview, she mentioned:

Grogu is quite the trickster, I bet you won’t be shocked by that. It’s amusing because, in every scene featuring Grogu, there were multiple puppeteers, each managing a different aspect of his actions. Yet, amidst all these puppeteers, he seemed like a single, real entity to me.

In The Mandalorian and Grogu, the actress depicts a character who previously fought for the rebellion against the tyrannical Galactic Empire. Now, she finds herself in the Outer Rim seeking allies such as Din Djarin, also known as Mando (Pascal), and Grogu. During an amusing turn in her interview, the actress humorously debated whether her small yet Force-sensitive co-star possesses more power than a Xenomorph from her Alien series. Weaver joked:

As a movie critic, let me express my thoughts: “To be honest, I don’t doubt his intentions, but there’s a nagging suspicion that he embodies the Xenomorph. His compulsion to dominate and wreak havoc, promoting his own group, is concerning. However, Yoda, as I recall, was too shrewd for such behavior. He stood for good, not destruction. And it seems to me that Grogu shares this noble trait, clearly.

On May 22, 2026, the duo of The Mandalorian and Grogu will grace the big screen. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. makes his comeback in the MCU with Avengers: Doomsday, set to release in the same month as part of a summer movie season that’s poised to be one of the most spectacular yet. A number of anticipated films, including Toy Story 5, Spider-Man: New Dawn, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and numerous other titles are all slated for release that very summer.
