Review: FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves welcomes generations old and new
FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves pays tribute to its roots as it embarks on a fresh journey, appealing to longtime enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
26 years after its initial run, the legendary FATAL FURY series makes a comeback with FATAL FURY: Wolf City. As a follow-up to Garou: Mark of the Wolves, FATAL FURY: Wolf City pays homage to its roots while embarking on a fresh journey that appeals to both longtime enthusiasts and newcomers. Here’s a look at what players can anticipate from this upcoming game.
FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves review
At the onset of its pre-release phase, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves initially offers a lineup of 17 characters, which includes fan favorites like Terry Bogard and Rock Howard. Reminiscent figures such as Rock Howard were brought up by Terry, and the game’s instructional guide emphasizes their bond through scenes where Terry tutors Rock on fighting techniques.
These lessons provide fundamental knowledge, including mastering the latest REV System, encompassing components such as REV Arts, REV Accel, REV Guard, and Rev Blows. For instance, Rev Blows represent potent moves designed to counter enemy assaults. Don’t forget that employing REV actions like these increases the REV Meter.
The tutorial offers ample opportunity for users to adjust their control settings and personalize their buttons, ensuring a more user-friendly experience from the get-go. All in all, it’s an excellent starting point to grasp the fundamental gameplay concepts. Further learning about other characters, including those beyond Rock, can be achieved through official YouTube tutorial videos.
Arcade Style and Smart Style
Regarding its accessibility, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves offers two control modes tailored for both beginners and experts. The Arcade Style is designed for seasoned players, featuring technical inputs that provide a classic gaming experience. Alternatively, the Smart Style streamlines controls to make the game easier for newcomers, while also enabling them to perform impressive moves and combinations.
It’s worth mentioning that, along with Terry and Rock, the game FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves boasts an eclectic and vibrant cast. Some familiar characters such as Mai Shiranui and Hotaru Futaba make a comeback, while newcomers like beginner-friendly Preecha and surprise entry DJ Salvatore Ganacci introduce a lively twist to the ensemble.
Before starting a fight, players have the option to personalize their selected character’s outfit before setting their Selective Potential Gear (S.P.G.) timing and one of the provided control layouts. The color options are somewhat restricted, but those who bought the game early got the FATAL FURY 2 Terry costume as a bonus.
Every character has the option to engage in various types of battles, such as Ranked Matches, Casual Matches, Room Matches, and more. For instance, a Room Match gives players the ability to personalize online rooms for practicing moves without affecting their ranking. These contests can accommodate up to 12 players in total. Additionally, Arcade Mode and South Town’s Episodes are worth exploring. Each combat-focused mode encourages strategic thinking and careful play.
FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves review: Episodes of South Town and Arcade Mode
In the series of South Town, it truly excels when you embark on a solo journey. For instance, a player can pick a character to advance in skill and personalize their equipment by battling against opponents while progressing through that character’s narrative. Additionally, players can take on quests, decide who they want to confront in South Town, discover new locations, and engage in some lively banter. During our playthrough, we followed Preecha’s tale. Although we cannot disclose details of her storyline, the engaging dialogue offers a refreshing twist, enhancing the gameplay with its witty exchanges amidst the action-packed punches, kicks, and combinations.
In Arcade Mode, events unfold swiftly yet provide ample screen time for each character. As we learned from SNK Corporation, Preecha is a scientist who experienced a dramatic shift when she encountered a fighter capable of summoning hurricanes. She went on to study under Joe Higashi and later embarked on a journey to uncover more about the world’s mysteries and innovative combat styles. Players engage in battles against various characters to unlock additional scenes showcasing Preecha’s exploits in South Town.
It’s worth mentioning that Cristiano Ronaldo is nowhere to be found in our review copy. He’s not in Color Edit Mode, neither. Before the start of FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves early access, SNK Corporation officially announced his absence as well.
The game showcases a vibrant design influenced by American comic books, with a unique anime touch that Hayato Konya, director of FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves, describes as “Japanimation.” Additionally, the diverse settings contribute to the overall visual appeal, and at its early access launch, it offers 19 different stages.
For character enthusiasts, there’s an option to personalize their favorites and see them pop up on the main menu screens of South Town episodes. Music lovers, on the other hand, will appreciate the Jukebox Mode where they can choose their preferred tracks.
