Is Sinners 2 In The Cards? Director Ryan Coogler Shares His Honest Thoughts After The Film’s First Weekend Success

Among the 2025 films, none stirred up such a cultural sensation for me as Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Initially, I was thrilled about it due to its horror genre, but watching it exceeded my expectations. The ending hints at a possible sequel, yet I feel ambivalent about this prospect. Interestingly, it appears that Ryan Coogler shares similar thoughts on a potential follow-up, as he has openly expressed his views on the subject.

Ryan Coogler is well-versed in creating immersive universes. From the blockbuster phenomenon of “Black Panther” to the emotionally resonant “Creed”, this director has built a reputation for establishing successful franchises. However, as he mentioned in a recent interview with Ebony magazine, not every story requires a follow-up. He expressed this viewpoint to the publication:

For a while now, I’ve been focusing on creating franchise films. Recently, I felt the need for a change, so I decided to step away from that.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to delve into my own words about “Sinners,” a remarkable cinematic journey by Ryan Coogler, marking his fifth collaboration with Michael B. Jordan. This gripping tale transports us to the chilling and authentic backdrop of the Jim Crow South, where twin brothers manage a juke joint. It masterfully combines Southern gothic elements, supernatural enigma, and profound themes such as family, legacy, and endurance. The end product is a film that’s daringly original, self-contained, and brimming with purpose. To quote the filmmaker himself, it’s like savoring a full-course meal – rich, satisfying, and complete in its own right.

I desired the film to encompass every course, from appetizers to dessert – I wanted the entire experience included… I aimed for it to be a complete and cohesive piece. This is what I’ve always had in mind.

Ryan Coogler crafted this project as a standalone piece, providing a refreshing change from the demands of constructing cinematic universes and anticipating future Marvel productions. This approach provides Sinners with the freedom to tell a self-contained story, which is increasingly rare among major releases nowadays. This quality appears to resonate with viewers, as Sinners enjoyed a successful debut weekend. Moreover, the movie starring Michael B Jordan has earned positive reviews from critics as well.

While there isn’t a confirmed sequel at present, I’d be thrilled if they developed a follow-up storyline in spirit to the film “Sinners.” The movie delves deeply into music as a means of spiritual and cultural narrative, making it uniquely powerful. Fundamentally, it’s a tale about power – creative, ancestral, and supernatural forces – that often gets overlooked in Black communities within Hollywood. Consequently, I would be delighted to see more stories along these lines, yet without the burden of creating a franchise.

The triumph of the characters portrayed as sinners in the movie could prompt the studio to reconsider the universe established by the director of “Fruitvale Station”. However, Ryan Coogler continues to concentrate on the present rather than future prospects. Featuring a breakout performance from Miles Caton and a powerful cast headlined by Michael B. Jordan, “Sinners” appears to be a deeply personal endeavor for all involved. It may not ignite a series of sequels, which is precisely what makes it unique.

The award-winning movie, “Sinners“, can be seen in cinemas right now. Look up your local cinema’s schedule for screening times.
