Meme-ing the Faith: Pope Francis’ Most Memorable Social Media Moments

Pope Francis, who died on April 21 at the age of 88, knew how to preach in the social media era.

He stayed current with new mobile applications, viewing them as means to connect with Catholics no matter their location. Despite ceasing television viewing in 1990, he signed up for Instagram in 2016, achieving an impressive milestone of 1.4 million followers within just 12 hours. In the last days of his life, he was regularly interacting with a parish in the conflict-ridden Gaza region via WhatsApp and video calls.

Young Catholics connected well with him due to his shared interests, particularly his love for soccer, which is globally popular. Being a supporter of the soccer team San Lorenzo from Buenos Aires where he was born, and having encounters with soccer greats Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, added to his appeal.

Despite having given up his job as a nightclub bouncer many years prior, he was still well-versed in partying. In 2010, he expressed that tango was an expression from the depths of his soul. In 2014, over 400 couples danced it in St. Peter’s Square as a token of their admiration for him.

Just like many newly famous individuals, it took time for Francis to adjust to the limelight. In an interview from 2015, he expressed his desire to step out unnoticed and enjoy a slice of pizza at a local pizzeria. However, due to his public status, he had to order in; in 2017, he celebrated his 81st birthday by blowing out the candles on an enormous 13-foot long cheese and tomato pizza.

As a passionate cinephile, there’s nothing that could top my affection for pizza and sweets – particularly Argentine delights like alfajores, those heavenly cookies drizzled with caramel and smothered in rich chocolate. In the balmy month of February 2014, I was gifted a life-sized chocolate sculpture of myself, crafted from an impressive 1.5 tons of cocoa beans! Oh, and let’s not forget my favorite energizing beverage – maté. Whenever it was offered on a rope line, I’d graciously accept a steaming cup.

2018 saw a flurry of interest among social media users when he was seen in photos with a small lamb, echoing the affection for animals shared by St. Francis of Assisi, who is also known as a shepherd to over a billion Catholics. This heartwarming moment at a live nativity scene went viral.

Following his sermons, Francis was always open to taking selfies, particularly with the younger generation. While he views the internet as a divine gift, he also expresses concern that social media platforms, meant to foster connection, may instead lead to increased isolation. In 2018, he cautioned, “The realm of digital communication is beneficial, but when it fosters detachment, it can cause you to forget the simple act of shaking hands.” This sentiment holds true for adults as well.
