Handmaid’s Twist: The Shocking Truth About Commander Wharton’s REAL Intentions
Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episode 4.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I must confess that “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been consistently captivating me, and the evolution of Wharton is no exception. Initially, I wasn’t entirely sure about him when the series began, but it’s now clear that he’s turning into the season’s most intriguing enigma. While Fred Waterford was a self-absorbed, misogynistic, and power-hungry individual, Wharton is being portrayed as a resilient, devoted leader with a hint of tragedy and compassion, particularly in his role as a protective father and mourning widower.
Initially, it was assumed that Josh Charles would portray the main antagonist in the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale; however, episode 4 suggests that Wharton may not be entirely evil as initially perceived. Among the characters in season 6, Wharton is the one whose motives or actions are difficult to predict, despite hints of darkness lurking beneath a mysterious facade. Interestingly, the closing scene of The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 episode 4 includes a romantic moment between Serena and Wharton, which implies a more intricate and unexpected narrative for both characters compared to initial expectations.
Commander Wharton & Serena Joy’s Story Is Different, Unpredictable & Exciting
Wharton Is Unlike Other Powerful Men In Gilead
Throughout, Wharton was envisioned as a replacement for Fred in season 6, but he couldn’t be more distinct from his counterpart. The latest episode reveals the stark contrast between the High Commander and other powerful men in Gilead. He appears to be one of the rare ones who doesn’t practice hypocrisy when maintaining power or abusing it, openly criticizing visits to Jezebel’s, stating that duty should surpass a man’s weaknesses. Additionally, he admits to being the cook in his household, unwilling to delegate this task to a Martha.
I’ve weighed in on the intriguing dynamic between Wharton and Yvonne Strahovski’s character, as depicted in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. Through Entertainment Weekly, it’s clear that Wharton’s staunch principles are being challenged by his growing attraction. So far, it appears that his longing to win her over is overshadowing his traditional beliefs. A remarkable twist in the latest episode saw Wharton serving Serena dessert, an act that defied all expectations of a Gilead High Commander. Even with the established love triangle, their dance in the street took us by surprise, leaving us guessing about their relationship and Wharton’s true character more than ever.
The Handmaid’s Tale May Be Setting Up A Commander Wharton Twist
Wharton Could Use Serena To Enhance Gilead’s Reputation Before Bringing Down New Bethlehem
Despite being portrayed as the main antagonist in the series finale, Charles’ character has yet to exhibit his sinister side. However, the actor’s remarks suggest that Wharton possesses a “ruthlessness,” which may be masked by his benevolence. This implies that while he appears harmless at present, the extent to which he’s prepared to advance Gilead might leave viewers stunned. The contrast between his actions and what he represents adds an enigmatic layer to his character, particularly in his perplexing bond with Serena, making “The Handmaid’s Tale” even more captivating.
Based on the show’s past events, it seems plausible that he will play the role of Serena, given her significant influence in the New Bethlehem plan from “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Interestingly, his character has shown resistance to the Gilead replacement, instead favoring diplomatic ties with the Republic of Gilead. However, despite appearing calm and gentle so far in the series, it wouldn’t be unexpected if he were to launch an attack on New Bethlehem once a sufficient number of refugees have returned. This could potentially signal the beginning of war and the spark for a long-standing revolution.
