10 Shocking Dark Secrets About The Vampire Diaries Fans Choose to Ignore
Primarily designed for a young adult audience, this show wasn’t your typical teen program. While it did focus on romance and friendship, these weren’t the only captivating elements. The storyline involving Stefan, Elena, and Damon had its sweet moments, but it also delved into some significantly dark themes that are frequently overlooked by fans of “Vampire Diaries”.
This fantasy drama series delved deep into the complexities of supernatural beings and their true natures, without flinching from portraying gritty scenes. As the name suggests, vampires in this genre are known for their bloodthirsty and gruesome traits. In the case of The Vampire Diaries, the series enjoyed highlighting both the best and worst aspects of both human and supernatural characters across numerous storylines within the show. Amidst the excitement and complexity of interweaving storylines in TVD, some viewers might have overlooked the more ominous undertones present in the series.
Elena Was Only 17, Surrounded By Vampires Who Were 150+
In Season 1 of the series, Elena’s captivating presence made fans seemingly oblivious to the significant age difference between her and the vampires, Stefan (who was 162) and Damon (who was 169). At their first encounter, Elena was just 17 years old.
In their respective teenage years, Stefan was 17 and Damon was 24. Yet, this didn’t diminish the fact that they had been alive for close to two centuries. With such vast worldly knowledge and life experience under their belts, their relationship with Elena was inherently uneven. Although intergenerational relationships were often met with disapproval in the world of TVD, Elena’s connections with Damon and Stefan seemed to escape this scrutiny.
Damon’s Revenge On the Whitmores Was Excessive
However, among all his actions, there was one pattern that seemed particularly sinister. It emerged that Damon had spent a significant part of his life under the control of the Augustine Society, who abducted and conducted experiments on him. Unforgiving by nature, this experience left an indelible mark on him. Consequently, Damon chose to torment the Whitmore family in a cruel and twisted way, driven purely by vengeance.
Damon systematically hunted down every member of the Whitmore family across generations, leaving one individual alive in each. His intention wasn’t kindness – he aimed to have this solitary Whitmore reproduce a new generation, only for Damon to eliminate them again and again. This calculated revenge was unsettling, and he carried it out even while he was with Elena.
Stefan Was a Serial Killer With a List
Typically portrayed as the virtuous Salvatore sibling, Stefan was actually one of the most faulted and fearsome vampires in the series. Despite his exterior gentleness and compassion, there lurked a vicious being inside him – The Ripper. During the 1910s and ’20s, when Stefan transformed into The Ripper, he embarked on a murderous rampage that was relentless and savage, earning himself the moniker of Monterrey’s Ripper.
It’s important to note that Stefan was indeed a murderer who systematically killed people, and he displayed common traits of such individuals, including saving mementos from his victims and keeping records of those he had killed. Despite being forgiven due to his inability to resist his actions during the Ripper time period, it should be remembered that the Ripper was essentially Stefan himself. He cannot be exonerated for the countless lives he unintentionally took.
Damon Waited For 145 Years For Katherine… Who Was Leading Him On
The individual experienced significant vilification, yet he endured some bleak phases throughout his existence. In 1864, he encountered Katherine, but she was deeply attracted to Stefan instead. However, she maintained Damon as a kind of status symbol, only to abandon him in confusion and suspense for 145 years when she feigned burial beneath the Mystic Falls tomb.
As a devoted movie buff, I’ve found myself reflecting on Damon’s tragic love story for Katherine. Even though she was living and spying on Stefan, he remained hopelessly in love with her. It was heart-wrenching to realize that for over a century and a half, Damon had been pining for a woman who never intended to reciprocate his feelings. He’d been cruelly misled, which made it all too understandable why Damon’s heart had grown cold.
Kai Killed Four of His Siblings and Tried to Kill His Nieces
Admirers often praise Kai for his witty humor and charming demeanor, yet beneath this facade lies a man who was both lethal and violent. He had a knack for making people laugh, but it was during these moments that he was committing gruesome murders. The most appalling act he committed was tracking down his own siblings and mercilessly taking the lives of no less than four of them, in an ill-advised quest for power within the Gemini Coven.
Kai brutally murdered many of his younger brothers and sisters, and later, during a wedding ceremony, he stabbed Joe in the abdomen. At that moment, Jo was pregnant, which suggests that Kai aimed to end the lives of the unborn twins as well. Despite this horrifying behavior, people were captivated by his charm, overlooking the fact that he was truly a monstrous individual.
Sybil Was Tricked Into Becoming a Cannibal
Fans grew angry with Sybil due to her manipulation of Damon and Enzo, compelling them to perform abhorrent acts on her behalf and Cade’s. Additionally, she kept these characters away from their romantic interests, earning her much disdain. However, unlike other villains like Klaus and Kai, fans found it difficult to feel compassion or understanding for Sybil, which left many puzzled.
The sad tale of her origins seemed to overshadow all others, for she was rejected by her community upon revealing her psychic abilities. Abandoned on an island alongside Seline, the former would entice sailors towards them, murdering and consuming their flesh to stay alive. Sybil remained blissfully unaware that she was feasting on human meat, but was horrified when she discovered the truth. However, her character fails to elicit the same level of affection from fans as other villains often do.
Bonnie Nearly Killed Herself In The Prison World
In a more simplified and conversational manner:
Her character’s storylines were sometimes excessively tough, yet some viewers might overlook the extreme hardships Bonnie experienced during Season 6. Instead of focusing on her selfless acts of saving others, it’s crucial to remember that she was left alone in the Prison World for an extended period. This prolonged isolation took a heavy toll on her mental health, causing her to contemplate suicide.
In a precarious state of mental wellness, Bonnie almost succumbed to an action she later regretted, only to miraculously regain control and avoid self-harm. However, the situation became even more dire when she was resurrected, as she endured additional trauma. Unfortunately, Bonnie’s life seemed cursed; she was transformed into a Huntress, deprived of her powers, brought close to death, and inexorably linked to her dearest friend, with scarcely a moment’s respite.
Matt Killed His Fiancée and Blamed Stefan For It
Matt Donovan was the lone human survivor of the Mystic Falls incidents, harboring a strong dislike for vampires due to the lives they had claimed. Yet, it’s essential to note that Matt himself was not blameless. A frequently overlooked aspect of the storyline reveals that Matt, in his zeal to eliminate vampires, fatally shot Penny Ares – the woman he was intended to wed. In a moment of obsession, he ventured into the darkness and fired at someone without confirming their identity, tragically killing Penny.
Despite Stefan being kind to him, Matt persisted in blaming Stefan for Penny’s death even after learning the truth. This act of accusing Stefan revealed that Matt wasn’t as innocent as he appeared. The fact that he killed the person who trusted him the most was a clear indication of this.
Finn Was Locked Away For 900 Years By His Brother
Klaus, once seen as a charismatic antagonist who won over many hearts, had a darker side. Despite being adored for his charm, some of his actions were downright terrifying. He was responsible for numerous lives lost, yet none compared to the sorrowful act he perpetrated against his eldest brother, Finn. Unlike his other siblings, Klaus never drew a dagger against Finn. For nine centuries, Finn lay in a coffin, oblivious to the world’s advancement.
He was the Original who met an untimely end first, adding a heavy dose of sadness to his story. Finn, despite having fewer transgressions than his kin, faced punishment earlier and in a more severe form. Finn cherished Sage and his family deeply, but for nine long centuries, he was confined and denied life’s joys due to Klaus’s pettiness. This act of Klaus stands out as the most wretched, as it targeted his very own bloodline.
Elena Knowingly Carried Out a Genocide
The character Elena in the series wasn’t as pure as her image suggested. Transforming into a vampire seemed to reveal a darker aspect of her personality. One of her early actions was to orchestrate a brutal genocide, aiming to reach the Cure. To guide Jeremy to the Hunter’s Mark, she laid a trap for Kol. Her intention was not just to kill Kol but also his entire lineage, so that Jeremy’s Mark would develop rapidly.
Elena’s actions, driven by an inherent self-centeredness and disregard for others, left many stunned, with her ruthless deeds often overlooked by fans. The tragic outcome of thousands of vampires losing their lives, without any discernible purpose, stemmed from Elena’s unwillingness to embrace being a vampire. This callous act underscored the dark side within her, revealing that even she was not immune to inflicting harm and suffering if it served her interests.
