As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming theatrical release titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which created quite a buzz after its sneak peek at Star Wars Celebration 2025. However, it seems that fans are not exactly enamored with the film’s title. Announced in early 2024, this new adventure is set to unfold following the events of The Mandalorian season 3. At present, details about the plot remain scarce, but it’s evident that our favorite duo – Din Djarin and Grogu – are continuing their partnership with the New Republic out of Adelphi Base.

Although specific plot points remain unclear, the initial glimpses of “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” viewed live by ScreenRant’s Molly Brizzell and James Hunt in Japan, have largely validated pre-existing rumors about the movie. Among these confirmations is Sigourney Weaver’s portrayal of a New Republic official. However, this highly anticipated title has sparked controversy within the fanbase; many criticize its simplicity as an unfortunate recurrence seen in series like “Andor,” “Ahsoka,” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Why is this happening?

Lucasfilm consistently titles their shows and movies based on characters because these names are instantly recognizable. Just as with other character names such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, this rule applies. Whether someone is a fan of the original or prequel trilogies, they’re probably familiar with the character and might be intrigued by a standalone story focusing on them. This pattern can be connected to the success of franchises like Marvel, which often title their productions after their main characters, particularly in the early stages of their development. Given that Star Wars is still expanding its presence on Disney+, it’s not unexpected that they would leverage the names of their most cherished characters to attract audience interest.

It’s Time For More Creativity

Ever since the debut of The Mandalorian, it’s been evident that Lucasfilm has struggled with originality in naming their shows. It’s unfortunate that they’ve persisted with this straightforward, rather dull approach, even in titles like The Mandalorian and Grogu. Given the memorable titles within the franchise such as The Empire Strikes Back and Revenge of the Sith, it’s surprising that Lucasfilm couldn’t come up with something more inspired for their latest offerings.

Given the brands at play, this move seems logical; however, we’re hoping Lucasfilm will take note of these comments and consider some changes. With upcoming movies from Taika Waititi and Dave Filoni yet to be titled, there’s a glimmer of expectation for something more innovative. Although fans might be disenchanted with the title “The Mandalorian and Grogu“, there’s no denying our excitement for its release on May 26, 2026.
