Back to the Future 3’s Train Is So Cool
In the film “Back to the Future,” Doc Emmett Brown initially rejoices upon inventing time travel, considering it a tremendous accomplishment. However, he later comes to regret his invention due to its impact on both past and future events. Towards the end of the second sequel, “Back to the Future Part III,” Doc Brown requests Marty McFly, the trilogy’s main character, to destroy his DeLorean time machine. As Marty returns to 1985 at the conclusion of the third movie, he quickly exits the DeLorean just as it gets struck by a train.
In a conversational tone, Marty says, “Well, Doctor,” referring to the character Doc Brown. He continues, “It’s all destroyed, exactly as you desired.” Despite this, there remains an opportunity for one more journey through time, as the Doctor goes back on his promise to visit Marty and Jennifer 100 years into the future in the Back to the Future films. This final alteration of timelines contrasts with Doc Brown’s persistent warnings about the risks of time travel throughout the trilogy. Much like other inventors, he comes to regret releasing forces that he cannot fully control. However, in the animated TV series derived from the Back to the Future movie franchise, the Doctor persists in his time-traveling adventures, once more disregarding his own cautionary sentiments.
Doc Brown Changes His Mind About Time Travel In Back To The Future 3’s Ending
He Regrets His Invention Throughout The Trilogy Until This Moment
If the events of “Back to the Future” and “Back to the Future Part II” didn’t convince Doc Brown, then the story of “Back to the Future Part III”, which is set 15 years before the 20th century began, clearly shows that tampering with time is not a good idea. Initially, Doc Brown wanted the DeLorean destroyed once it brought Marty McFly back to 1985. However, instead of returning to the future himself, he chose to stay in 1885 where he fell in love with Clara Clayton.
In 1985, Marty thought he wouldn’t cross paths with Doc again, but in an unexpected turn of events, his mentor who time-travels, accompanied by Clara and their sons Jules and Verne, appeared in a train-like time machine. He informed Marty that his stance on the impact of time travel on the future had changed. To Marty’s girlfriend, Jennifer, he said, “Your future isn’t predestined – no one’s is. Your future is whatever you create for yourself.
In a timeframe long past his birth, it seems Doc Brown has grown unperturbed by the perils of time travel. This change in attitude leads him to construct another time machine from a steam train, with the intention of revisiting 1985 again.
Back To The Future’s Animated Series Confirmed Doc Brown & Marty McFy Kept Time Traveling
They Go Back To Various Time Periods Across History In A Restored Version Of The DeLorean
In addition to their adventures together in the classic “Back to the Future Part III”, Doc Brown’s time-traveling escapades continue, this time taking place in various historical eras. The animated series “Back to the Future” features Doc Brown traveling as far back as the Middle Ages and Ancient Egypt with his family, while he brings Marty McFly along for rides through Ancient Rome and 16th-century Latin America. This exploration of different time periods seems to account for the final line in “Back to the Future 3”, where Doc tells Marty he won’t be traveling to the future anymore because he’s already been there.
Since the TV series focuses on the Doc’s offspring, it follows the sequence of events in the “Back to the Future” franchise after the third installment. The series implies that Doctor Brown and Marty McFly have carried on their time-traveling escapades past the destruction of the DeLorean at the end of “Back to the Future Part III.” Interestingly, the presence of the DeLorean in the first episode hints that the Doc might have reconstructed it.
Back To The Future 3’s Train Is So Cool, You Can Almost Forgive How It Hurts Doc Brown’s Arc
This Time-Traveling Locomotive Is Cinema’s Ultimate Steampunk Machine
At the close of Back to the Future 3, Dr. Brown’s emergence from his steam-powered time machine on a train indicates the completion of his character development, which appeared to conclude with him choosing to settle down with Clara after retiring from time travel. The Doc’s choice to remain in 1885 signifies the resolution of his concerns about time travel and his remorse for creating it.
In the films, the DeLorean is uniquely established as the sole time machine until its destruction, giving a conclusive feel to the narrative. However, when Doc reappears in the future through another device, it contradicts what we’ve seen thus far, potentially undermining Doc’s character development and the DeLorean’s iconic status as one of sci-fi cinema’s most impressive flying cars. Nevertheless, it’s understandable why Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, the creators of the Back to the Future series, might choose to end their trilogy in this way, given the allure of Doc’s extraordinary time machine.
The vehicle blends the physical structure and steam engine powered by coal from a 19th-century train with wings, a nuclear power source, and a reimagined version of the iconic flux capacitor from “Back to the Future,” creating one of the most imaginative depictions of steampunk style in film. Although Doc Brown abandoned his locomotive in the animated series, this design offers the original “Back to the Future” trilogy an epic finale it deserves.
