Daredevil: Born Again’s Shocking Original Opening Scene Revealed!
It’s no surprise that “Daredevil: Born Again” underwent significant changes, including extensive reshoots, before its premiere, and I’m thrilled that Marvel opted for this overhaul. After discovering the original opening scene of “Daredevil: Born Again” episode 1, I can now say with certainty that this show ranks among the best in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The series offered a captivating storyline, exceptional acting, and didn’t flinch from action or the TV-MA rating, even featuring the most gruesome death scene in the MCU.
I’m relieved that the re-shoots turned out to be beneficial for the show, as there was some apprehension about it before its release due to the reshoots it underwent. Fortunately, it demonstrated that reshoots can indeed enhance an MCU production, contrary to popular belief. Now, two of the directors of Daredevil: Born Again have validated this idea by disclosing their original plan for the show’s opening, which makes me confident that what we ultimately received was definitely superior.
Daredevil: Born Again Episode 1 Co-Director Revealed The Original Opening Scene
The Opening Scene Would Have Been Particularly Stripped-Back
Five directors were involved in the production of the series ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, each handling different episodes. Aaron Moorhead directed episodes 1, 8, and 4, while Jeffrey Nachmanoff handled episodes 4 and 5. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, these two directors discussed the creation of the show. Regarding Daredevil’s return to his costume, Moorhead shared an early concept for episode 1, explaining that the story would commence with Matt Murdock in his suit, only to quickly remove his mask and opt against wearing it for several subsequent episodes initially. Here are their exact quotes:
Aaron Moorhead: “Originally, we planned to open the first episode of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ with Matt Murdock in his suit, but immediately after, he would take off the mask and refuse to wear it again for several episodes.”
Jeffrey Nachmanoff: “[In the early stages], our intention was to introduce Daredevil without his costume initially, allowing the audience to reacquaint themselves with Matt Murdock before we see him in action as Daredevil.
Moorhead: This is quite intriguing. In the initial sequence of scenes filmed for Daredevil: Born Again, there’s a shot absent from any of the series. I believe this shot served as the opening, and in it, Matt was dressed in his outfit. After removing his mask, he appeared incredibly sorrowful, tears streaming down his face. He then discarded the mask, concluding the entire scene.
Nachmanoff: It was by the water.
In the original script, the event in question was meant to occur posthumously, serving as the reason behind Foggy’s extended period without his suit. However, it seems there’s an entire episode (episode 101) dedicated to this event now.
Moorhead mentions that additional filming was necessary to provide an extended version of the initial scene showing Foggy’s demise. This revised opening portrays a series of events leading up to his death, Matt Murdock’s reaction, and the subsequent aftermath with a time skip of one year. I appreciate this adjustment because I believe the revised version is more compelling.
Why Daredevil: Born Again Is Better Off With Its New Episode 1 Post-Overhaul
Daredevil: Born Again Episode 1 Gave Foggy’s Death The Time It Deserved
Among the cherished characters of Daredevil, Foggy Nelson stands out as a significant figure, serving as Matt Murdock’s moral compass alongside Karen Page. Prior to the series “Daredevil: Born Again,” fans had come to understand Foggy’s importance to Matt, with his potential demise serving as a powerful driving force behind many of Matt’s decisions, such as his ultimatum to Kingpin at the end of “Daredevil” season 3. If the first episode of “Daredevil: Born Again” had only depicted Matt grieving over Foggy’s apparent off-screen passing, I would have felt somewhat shortchanged.
In a poignant reinterpretation, episode 1 of “Daredevil: Born Again” offered the most profound portrayal of the narrative by vividly illustrating the circumstances leading to Foggy’s demise. Witnessing their joyful camaraderie only intensified the sorrow of his passing, lending it maximum emotional resonance. Without experiencing the urgency of this event, it could have been more challenging to fully appreciate the emotional depth of Matt’s tale post-Foggy’s death and Karen’s departure.
