Farscape’s Unfinished Romance: Is Crichton & Aeryn’s Love Doomed?

As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but be captivated by the myriad love stories that unfold in the universe of Farscape. Yet, one romantic connection continues to haunt me with a sense of impending sorrow – a feeling that persists even though the series concluded in 2004. Characters like John Crichton, Aeryn Sun, and Zhaan all found themselves entangled in love affairs throughout Rockne S. O’Bannon’s space opera, some even juggling multiple relationships. This complex tapestry of affection is part of what makes Farscape one of the most underrated sci-fi shows of its time. Despite the passage of over two decades since its cancellation, I often find myself pondering the fate of Moya and her crew. Wherever they may be now, I can’t help but wonder about their journey.

One of the main recurring themes in the science fiction series ‘Farscape’ is the complex dynamic between Commander John Crichton (Ben Browder) and Officer Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black). From early on, Crichton’s feelings for Aeryn are evident, yet her character is inherently resistant to emotional involvement due to her Peacekeeper background. This resistance makes their romantic development a gradual process. Despite eventually acknowledging their relationship, I believe there are two key factors that may lead to its eventual downfall.

Despite sharing a striking resemblance, Crichton and Aeryn hail from distinct backgrounds. Browder’s character is an Earth-born human, while Black’s character belongs to the extraterrestrial race known as the Sebaceans. Although Sebaceans are vulnerable in hotter climates for extended periods, they enjoy the perk of having longer lifespans compared to humans. Farscape doesn’t definitively state their lifespan, but it suggests that Sebaceans regularly live beyond their 100th birthday.

Generally speaking, humans tend to live around 80 years. However, just like Sebaceans, it doesn’t always mean that every human will live exactly that length. If Crichton and Aeryn, characters from Farscape, have had the chance to grow old together since the show ended, then even though they seemed about the same age during the series, it’s not likely that Crichton would outlive Aeryn by much. This means that Black’s character might have been without her companion for the final two decades of her life, or maybe longer.

Indeed, it’s unlikely that Crichton and Aeryn will ever know tranquility for the rest of their days. Given Aeryn’s background as a Peacekeeper soldier, she was conditioned with specific behaviors and characteristics which she’s found difficult to completely shed. Her experiences outside the Peacekeepers, particularly with Moya’s crew, have allowed her to grow and develop into a more complex individual who values peace over conflict. However, she hasn’t been able to fully eradicate those ingrained instincts.

When Aeryn’s loved ones are in danger, she often responds impulsively with violence, viewing it as the quickest solution. While Crichton frequently joins her in these confrontations, he isn’t usually the one to initiate them. There have been moments when Aeryn has stepped up and tried to solve problems on her own, which can put her at risk and potentially deny her the chance to grow old with Crichton.

Crichton & Aeryn’s Farscape Relationship Beating All The Odds So Far Is What Makes Them So Great

The human & the former Peacekeeper are destined to be together, but also doomed from the start

Crafting an engaging science fiction romance isn’t a walk in the park. Love stories may seem commonplace, but in the realm of sci-fi, it’s easy to get sidetracked by epic space battles or exotic alien species. However, when a skilled writer or team of writers manages to make a love story shine amidst these spectacles, it can truly enrich the overall narrative. It might be tempting to prioritize flashier themes, but investing in a thoughtfully crafted and surprising romance can significantly enhance the tale.

Farscape skillfully created the impression that Crichton and Aeryn might never find happiness together. It appears almost miraculous that they even crossed paths initially, but their encounters were fraught with obstacles and complications stemming from their individual pasts. The numerous challenges they faced to survive and stay united only serve to underscore the reasons why they should not have been a couple. Ultimately, it’s the constant tension in their relationship that makes their journey through Farscape all the more compelling.
