You Won’t Believe How Old The Croods Characters Really Are!
In the distinctive family structure of their ancient era, viewers might ponder about the ages of the Croods. At the start of the DreamWorks film, The Croods, with Grug (Nicolas Cage) as the over-cautious leader, they’ve always dwelled in a cave due to the perils of the Croodaceous period. Grug’s adventurous daughter Eep (Emma Stone) yearns for more than just surviving in fear. A turn of events compels them to venture outside their safe haven and discover a new home, becoming one of the most beloved DreamWorks animated movies from the 2010s.
In the original film, Grug, his mate Ugga (Catherine Keener), Eep, their son Thunk (Clark Duke), daughter Sandy (Kailey Crawford), and Gran (Cloris Leachman) come across various unusual creatures, landscapes, and new acquaintances such as Guy (Ryan Reynolds). In the sequel, titled The Croods: A New Age, and in the DreamWorks animated TV series spin-off, The Croods: Family Tree, they meet characters like the Bettermans, a more advanced family who try to persuade them to adopt an agrarian way of life. The humor in the franchise revolves around the contrast between generations and eras, so the age of the Croods characters is significant.
10. Grug Crood
Age: 39
In a time when life spans were relatively short during the Pliocene era, Grug (voiced by Nicolas Cage) stands out as an elder, being 39 years old. This age gives him a unique perspective, having lived long enough to grasp the perils of their world and witnessing the consequences of carelessness. As the patriarch of the Crood family, his wisdom is beneficial yet sometimes detrimental to the family dynamic in the first movie.
Grug cherishes his family deeply and prefers to shield them from potential harm within a cave, distrusting any unfamiliar situations they might face, such as Eep’s new companion, Guy. Over time, Grug must adapt to the reality that nurturing their bond means allowing them autonomy to make choices, even those he deems risky or perilous for their safety.
9. Ugga Crood
Age: 38
In the movie “Croods”, Ugga Crood (voiced by Catherine Keener) is Grug’s companion, a thoughtful mother to their three children – Eep, Thunk, and Sandy. At 38 years old in the first film, Ugga is slightly younger than her partner Grug. Ugga admires Grug as a strong and responsible family leader, who strictly enforces safety rules. Yet, she also empathizes with their daughter Eep’s longing for more life experiences.
She backs Grugg yet becomes bolder in questioning his judgments regarding the family’s welfare. In a critical moment, she shields her kids from a carnivorous giant flower, demonstrating her resilience in adapting to this unfamiliar environment. This incident underscores that she has spent a considerable amount of time in this perilous world and comprehends its harsh realities.
8. Eep Crood
Age: 19
Eep Crood, voiced by Emma Stone, is the spirited and free-living daughter of Grug and Ugga, often characterized as a teenager who isn’t yet mature enough to act independently without parental guidance. However, it’s important to note that she is actually 19 years old, which adds complexity to her strife with her father. Eep yearns for more freedom and finds herself constrained by his restrictions, feeling suffocated as a result.
1. When a sound from outside the cave makes her ignore Grug’s alarms, she accidentally sets off an avalanche, unveiling a verdant landscape hidden from their sight.
2. Intrigued by Guy’s numerous innovations and unfazed by his contemporary lifestyle, she challenges Grug’s traditional views, causing him great distress. Eep is like any teen eager to explore life on her own terms, as cautionary stories about Krispy the Bear eventually lose their impact.
7. Guy
Age: 20
As a cinephile, I’d put it this way: In the role voiced by Ryan Reynolds, I’m more than just a savior for the Croods; I help them grasp the mysteries of the world lying beyond their cave and ready them for The End. Physically robust and mature, I’m a touch older than Eep at 20 years old. Despite our romantic bond, our age gap is significant – it symbolizes the desire for freedom that Eep craves and the independence synonymous with adulthood I embody.
From my perspective, given his understanding of fire, physics, and other advancements unique to our evolutionary path (such as upright posture and less Neanderthal strength), it’s evident that he exhibits a higher degree of emotional intelligence compared to the Croods. It’s plausible that he belongs to a different species altogether, and may even enjoy a longer lifespan. However, these aspects are not delved into in the movies or shows we know.
6. Thunk
Age: 9
In simpler terms, Thunk (played by Clark Duke) is the slightly wild son of Grug and Ugga and Eep’s brother. Although he appears larger than Eep, they are actually siblings. Compared to his sister, Thunk may not be as clever, but he is smart enough to express his age accurately. For instance, when he accidentally sets himself on fire in one scene, he begs the flames, “Please, I’m just 9 years old.” This fits with comments made by Grug about Thunk spending too much time indoors and not playing outside enough.
Unlike Eep, he’s not yet at the stage where he’s preoccupied with seeking a partner or experiencing romantic feelings. Thunk, on the other hand, is more easily influenced by his parents’ warnings than Eep is. However, as we venture beyond the cave, I’ve noticed that Thunk gradually finds his voice and starts to assert himself, embodying the role of the young one who still harbors a healthy dose of fear towards the unknown.
5. Gran Crood
Age: 80
In this Stone Age setting, Gran, voiced by Cloris Leachman, stands as Ugga’s mother and the shrewdly spunky elder among the Croods. Despite her 80-year-old exterior, she has evidently outlived many in this prehistoric world. Although her looks might imply age, she carries the vigor of a younger soul, which offers insight into how she’s managed to survive thus far.
She doesn’t seem particularly heedful of Grug’s cautions regarding life beyond the cave, since she feels that she has lived for a sufficient amount of time. Consequently, each day she lives is something to be cherished rather than feared. Moreover, it appears she has come to terms with her advancing age, often exclaiming with enthusiasm, “I’m still alive!
4. Sandy Crood
Age: 4
In the world of Crood Academy, Sandy Crood (portrayed by Randy Thom) is introduced as Grug and Ugga’s youngest daughter. At the start of the story, she’s only 4 years old, but matures to 5 in the sequel. Sandy resembles her older sister Eep, with vibrant red hair and freckles. In the early stages, she can’t speak or communicate much beyond nibbles and growls, making her more akin to a cherished pet than a human child. However, when Sandy does start talking, her first words are heartwarmingly simple: “Dada” and the exuberant “Whee!”, echoing the common first words of many modern children that often refer to their parents or express delight.
3. Phil Betterman
Age: Late 30s
In The Croods: A New Age, Phil Betterman, voiced by Peter Dinklage, emerges as a more advanced human and a possible adversary of Grug’s before they gradually develop trust. Initially, it seems that Phil is around the same age as Grug, which adds to their competition. Despite this shared age, Phil exudes an air of superiority and advancement compared to Grug, despite being somewhat cowardly.
In contrast to living in caves, which necessitates stooping, Phil’s height is significantly increased due to his arboreal lifestyle. Additionally, he enjoys a more diverse diet because of the fresh vegetables he cultivates himself. He imparts knowledge about agricultural societies and the advantages of contemporary innovations to Grug, such as rudimentary lifts, water conduits, and cultivated fields.
2. Hope Betterman
Age: Late 30s
Hope Betterman (voiced by Leslie Mann) is Phil Betterman’s wife and, similar to him, embodies a contemporary lifestyle as an advanced human. She finds it hard to grasp how the Croods have managed for so long without the comforts of agriculture and running water, yet she is more open than her husband to welcoming a fresh crowd of companions to socialize with.
She appears younger than her actual age due to her diligent self-care and adherence to contemporary cleanliness, while sporting fashion trends that would be popular in the Pliocene epoch. This sets her apart from Ugga, the matriarch of the movie, who prioritizes survival over appearance, highlighting the contrast between the families.
1. Dawn Betterman
Age: 18
As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: In the role of Dawn Betterman (voiced by the talented Kelly Marie Tran) from “The Croods” series, I’m the 18-year-old daughter of Phil and Hope. While I may not be as adventurous as Eep, there’s a burning curiosity in me about what lies beyond the utopia my parents constructed in “The Croods: A New Age”. As we navigate this sequel together, Eep and I share an exciting bond, finding solace in each other as fellow teenagers. Yet, Eep takes on a guiding role, helping me explore more about our world.
She doesn’t share the same type of scars as Eep, who comes from a more turbulent lifestyle, and demonstrates how a lack of hardship can impact a character. Similar to Eep, she is thrilled about having another teenage girl in her life to connect with within the world of The Croods.
