From Flop to Fame: Jack Black & Michael Cera’s Comedy Surges on Streaming Charts!

A not-so-favorite historical comedy, featuring Jack Black and Michael Cera, is currently topping a popular streaming platform’s chart. Both actors are well-known for their comedic roles, even though they have an age gap of 19 years. In the early 2000s, they both gained fame. For Jack Black, his big break was in Richard Linklater’s 2003 film, School of Rock. Following this success, he took on numerous comedy roles including the romantic comedy The Holiday, the war movie parody Tropic Thunder, and the eccentric wrestling movie Nacho Libre.

2003 marked the breakthrough of Michael Cera, as he debuted in the role of George Michael Bluth on Arrested Development. He continued to play this character until 2006, when the popular Fox sitcom ended its run. After the series concluded, Cera moved on to establish himself as a film actor, with notable comedy roles including those in the high school movie Superbad, the satirical film about teen pregnancy titled Juno, and the action-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which features video game themes.

Year One Has Found A Streaming Audience

It Is The Only Movie Featuring Both Michael Cera & Jack Black

2009’s “Year One” – the unique film featuring Michael Cera and Jack Black – has seen a surge in streaming since its release 15 years ago. Directed and co-written by Harold Ramis, this movie narrates the tale of two outcast hunter-gatherers who were expelled from their tribe, and during their adventures, they stumble upon biblical characters, learning that civilization has made significant strides in other parts of the world. The film also featured Oliver Platt, David Cross, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Juno Temple, Olivia Wilde, and Hank Azaria. Despite its cast, “Year One” did not receive favorable reviews, scoring a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes with an almost identical audience score of 24%.

Currently, the movie “Year One” has made its way onto Hulu’s daily list of most-watched films in the U.S., climbing up to the No. 6 spot on April 18 after debuting on the platform on April 1. It has held this position for a day so far, and it is worth noting that it is the fourth oldest movie on this chart, with “The Da Vinci Code” (2006), “Superbad” (2007), and “Garfield” (2004) taking the top three spots. The complete chart can be found below for your reference.

What This Means For Year One

It Arrived On Hulu At The Right Time

The inclusion of a film featuring Michael Cera, specifically “Superbad,” on the list suggests that he might be a significant attraction for streaming viewers as well. However, the movie “Year One” managing to succeed despite its poor reputation could also be due to the fact that it falls within a resurgence period for Jack Black’s career. Although Black experienced a series of disappointments in the early 2010s, he has since been associated with several major modern successes starting from his role in “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” in 2017. This includes box office giants such as the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” and the current theater hit, “A Minecraft Movie.
