“An inspiring love story”: Jason Isaacs and Gillian Anderson’s new British movie is not to be missed
Following his role in the third season of “The White Lotus,” Jason Isaacs is set to star in an upcoming British drama titled “The Salt Path.” Notably, this production will see him working alongside his “Sex Education” co-star, Gillian Anderson, once more.
The film narrates a real-life account, drawn from Raynor Winn’s memoir published in 2018, about Winn (Anderson) and her partner Moth’s (Isaacs) journey of approximately 630 miles along the coastal path stretching between Cornwall, Devon, and Dorset, commonly known as the South West Coast Path.
The path they chose is England’s longest marked hiking trail, as they made the decision to walk it after losing their home due to a failed business transaction.

That very same week, they found out about their family farm’s loss and Moth was also informed he had corticobasal degeneration (CBD) – an irreversible brain disorder which can lead to deteriorating issues with speech, mobility, eating, and memory (as stated by the NHS).
The journey significantly transformed their lives, allowing the couple to rekindle their joy even within their difficult situations.
Initially, Winn shared her experiences through an article published in The Big Issue back in 2017. Later on, she composed a comprehensive memoir which she kept private and only shared with her husband.
Following their daughter’s encouragement, she managed to publish The Salt Path the next year. It turned out to be a bestseller and won several awards, including the Royal Society of Literature’s Christopher Bland Prize, and was also shortlisted for both the Costa Book Awards and Wainwright Prize.
The movie version of this production is helmed by Marianne Elliott, a renowned theatre director recognized for works like “War Horse” and “Angels in America” in London. This marks her first venture into feature films. The screenplay for this film was penned by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, who has previously written scripts for “She Said” and “Hot Milk.”
Or more concisely:
Marianne Elliott, a well-known theatre director, directs her first feature film with this movie adaptation. The screenplay is by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, known for works like “She Said” and “Hot Milk.
Elliott shared with Deadline her intention to develop a film that is heavily visually-driven, with minimal dialogue.
Isaacs went on to label the film as a heartwarming tale of love, speaking about this to Empire. Additionally, he opened up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding his experience working alongside the actual characters portrayed in the movie.
He reminisced, “Encountering them rekindled faith in the seemingly overly romantic, ideas that only movies might conceive. Their love story began in their teenage years, endured the toughest trials life presented, and persisted even during tougher times ahead.
Reflecting on the tale, I found myself compelled to share: “Encountering narratives about individuals who endure unimaginable hardships, both spiritually and physically, not only serves as a testament to their resilience, but also subtly underscores the values that truly matter in life. It’s a poignant lesson – one that, fortunately for us, we can grasp without experiencing such hardship ourselves.
In an interview with Variety, Anderson conveyed the same sentiment, expressing optimism that viewers will take away the idea that “people have the ability to endure and adapt.
As she continued discussing her fascination with the project, the actress reminisced about the time when she read the book: “For weeks after reading it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Reframing this passage for easier understanding: “Experiencing this made me see homeless people differently – as anyone could end up in such a situation. It deepened my empathy, realizing it’s an issue affecting many, and not just isolated incidents. I came to understand the need for addressing this universal problem that affects those less fortunate.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to be part of this exciting project alongside the talented cast. Ted Lasso’s James Lance takes on the role of Grant, Silent Witness’ Hermione Norris plays Polly, Father Brown’s Megan Placito joins as Bea, and The Essex Serpent’s Rebecca Ineson steps into the character of Rowan in our movie. Can’t wait to see these brilliant actors bring their characters to life!
When might viewers in the United Kingdom have the opportunity to watch “The Salt Path”, which made its debut last September at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Special Presentations section?
Fans won’t have to wait much longer, as “The Salt Path” is set to hit the screens of UK and Irish movie theaters on May 30th. However, information regarding its release in U.S. cinemas has not been disclosed yet.
Last year, a preview of the film was released, highlighting the struggles of the pair as they faced off against nature’s challenges and economic difficulties in their journey.
Apart from “The Salt Path”, Isaacs has a packed schedule ahead. This year, you can see him in the war drama “Words of War” and the Shakespeare musical adaptation “Juliet & Romeo“. Additionally, he’s preparing for roles in Simon Amstell’s upcoming film “Maria“, as well as movies named “Raider” and “Heavyweight“.
Apart from Anderson, you should know that he has a full plate. He is set to grace our screens in Disney’s highly anticipated film, “Tron: Ares,” due out this year. Additionally, he will feature in Ben Affleck’s latest production, “Animals.” Furthermore, his television appearances include roles in the series “The Abandons” and “Trespasses.
The Salt Path is due to be released in UK and Irish cinemas on May 30.
