Stellar Blade studio’s success has made its director one of the richest people in Korea

The renowned studio Shift Up, known for creating Stellar Blade and Goddess of Victory: Nikke, has risen to become a prominent player among South Korean game studios. Thanks to the incredible popularity of these action games, particularly the latter, the studio’s CEO and game director, Kim Hyung-tae, has amassed significant wealth, earning him a place among the wealthiest individuals in South Korea.

According to Forbes, the success of his gaming ventures has amassed a fortune of approximately $725 million for the Korean game director, who was previously a game artist and later founded the company. Remarkably, Kim’s wealth has soared significantly since then.

Currently, following a substantial drop in stock values, the game designer Kim Hyung-tae’s net worth stands at approximately $725 million in South Korea. Despite this decline, he remains among the wealthiest individuals in Korea.

Following my stint on Blade and Soul, a highly-acclaimed Korean MMO, I launched Shift Up in 2013. Since then, the triumph of Goddess of Victory: NIKKE has been nothing short of spectacular, raking in a fortune that essentially financed the extensive development period for Stellar Blade.

For the past ten years, Nikke’s achievements have accumulated vast amounts of money and have become associated with numerous well-known franchises. Lately, the game has teamed up with Chainsaw Man, NieR, Re:Zero, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and it was recently announced that Eve from Stellar Blade will be joining the game as part of a unique collaboration this year.

In the coming months, Shift Up’s Stellar Blade is poised to secure its second victory, thanks to its launch on PC platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store in July. Although it enjoyed success as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, the arrival of the PC version is predicted to be a massive milestone for this action game, primarily because of the thriving modding community.

At Shift Up, they’re currently developing Stellar Blade 2 as well. But, it may take a few more years before we get any updates or sneak peeks of this anticipated sequel.
