9-1-1` Showrunner Reveals Why Bobby Nash Had to Die
Aftermath unfolds following an incredibly surprising turn of events. The character, Firefighter Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause), whom viewers believed invincible, succumbed to a lethal virus in the episode titled “Lab Rats.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of Bobby’s selfless actions. When he and his comrades encountered a lethal mutation of the CCHF virus, Bobby prioritized Chimney’s (Kenneth Choi) survival, ultimately sealing his own fate. With tears in my eyes, I watched him bid a heart-wrenching farewell to Athena (Angela Bassett) behind a glass partition before stepping out for what proved to be his final prayer. The impact on fans was profound and emotional.
Tim Minnear, the showrunner, has explained why it was necessary for Bobby to meet his end. In essence, he referred to Bobby as the sacrificial lion. When asked about when the plan to kill off such a significant character had been in place, Minnear replied, “I’d say it was on some level since last season. In fact, I’d even say we’ve been discussing this possibility as far back as season 4.
I had a feeling all along that the show would eventually require such an event for tension, considering how often Athena lands planes on highways or ships capsize. I want viewers to cling to their seats more tightly when such incidents occur, thinking ‘He could do it again, he’s done it before.’ So, it seemed necessary to introduce something like that.
I can’t wait for you to join me in episode 16 as we delve into Athena’s struggle following the tragic event. But hold on tight, because episodes 17 and especially 18 will really showcase the aftermath for Chimney, particularly so. Every character is affected, but Chimney has a unique storyline to explore. The bond between these two men was something special. “Chimney was the one who encouraged him to keep going, not just endure. Now that Bobby isn’t here anymore, you’ll see how this impacts Chimney in a profound way.
Minnear Always Knew He Would Have To Start Killing Characters
In my opinion, as a dedicated fan of 9-1-1, I’ve found myself questioning the implausibility of the characters constantly escaping from life-threatening situations unscathed, given all the plane crashes, tsunamis, numerous fires and collapses they’ve faced. However, it seems that Minnear thought it was necessary to add a touch of reality to the storyline by writing off Nash as a character.
He stated, “‘Choosing who should be affected was the challenging part,’ he explained. “However, I wanted this action to resonate most profoundly across all characters. So I decided, ‘If I’m going to make this impact, I must choose a character whose influence would ripple through everyone.’ And that character is Bobby, isn’t it? That’s the one who will touch everyone.
Speaking as a film enthusiast, I’d say it resonated with me that his demise wasn’t random, but rather the poignant, inevitable climax of his journey. He initially sought death in L.A., only to rediscover the joy of living. When the time came for him to make the ultimate sacrifice, it wasn’t out of desire, but duty. It was a testament to his redemption. Every aspect of it felt perfectly aligned.
9-1-1 is streaming on Hulu.
