Angela Bassett Shocked by Unexpected 9-1-1 Character Exit

star Angela Bassett opens up about Peter Krause’s tragic exit from the fan-favorite series.

When asked if she had any clue that the latest episode of 9-1-1, where her character LAPD Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash is played by Bassett, would lead to the death of Krause’s LAFD Captain Bobby Nash, Bassett stated, “Not at all. No hints, no whispers, not even rumors, nothing.” She explained that towards the end of the season, they are often racing against time to receive their scripts and start filming them almost immediately. It’s like getting the script today and starting to shoot it tomorrow.

It was quite a surprising and astonishing moment for me when I discovered who the script revealed to be. At first, I had thought it would be another character or even the entire bio lab, anyone really. Bassett further explained how showrunner Tim Minear contacted her before the episode, hinting that one of the main characters would meet their end in this particular episode. She admitted to wondering if she herself was the one who would perish, as a natural instinct for self-preservation. However, she was taken aback when she found out it was actually her on-screen husband who was to pass away.

Krause has been a prominent cast member on the series “9-1-1” since it first aired in 2018. Among the main cast, Krause is one of the few who have stayed with the show from its debut, alongside actors like Bassett, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, and Kenneth Choi. Despite initial expectations that Krause would continue with the series, it was announced before his final episode, titled “Lab Rats,” which aired on April 17, that he was leaving. The episode, titled “15,” is said to be one of the show’s best, with the creator remarking, “It’s really impressive… I can hardly believe it’s for network television.

A 9-1-1 Spinoff Is Moving Forward

Krause’s sudden departure is one of numerous significant transformations the franchise has experienced lately. In February, the spinoff starring Rob Lowe, titled “9-1-1: Lone Star“, concluded with its fifth and final season finale. Fortunately, fans can anticipate another spinoff, although specifics about the new series are yet to be disclosed. However, the title itself hints that the franchise’s latest shift will be less drastic, which may offer some solace to longtime fans amidst so many major changes.

9-1-1 is currently available for streaming on Disney+ and Prime Video.
