Anjelica Huston Shines in ‘Towards Zero’ – Behind the Scenes Drama Revealed!

The Academy Award-winning actress Anjelica Huston consistently captivates audiences in every project she takes on, and this extends to her recent work on television. In particular, she has made her mark in the English production “Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero,” serving as her latest foray onto the small screen. Since Lady Tressilian is a significant character in Agatha Christie’s 1944 detective novel, it’s only fitting that this role in a contemporary TV adaptation would be entrusted to a seasoned actress like Huston.

In the TV show, Anjana Vasan plays the lady’s assistant (known from “Black Mirror”). Meanwhile, Tressilian, who has a grown son involved in a scandalous new relationship when the miniseries starts, is portrayed by Mimi Keene, famously known for her role in “Sex Education.” Prior to the release of “Towards Zero” on BritBox, MovieWeb interviewed both Vasan and Keene. They discussed their experiences working alongside co-star Huston since their characters in the series will each have a significant and intense scene with the formidable Lady Tressilian, as you’ll soon see.

Vasan shared with MovieWeb that he was quite anxious about the scene where he had to argue with her, as our interaction became rather heated. He said, “I couldn’t believe I was yelling at Anjelica Huston! This is insane. What on earth am I doing here?” In addition, he questioned his own abilities, but she responded positively. She said, “Bring it on more!” and was incredibly supportive… She enjoyed it, and we had a fantastic time together.

“So Exciting and Nerve-Wracking”

For Keene, experiencing genuine emotions during the scenes opposite Huston seemed to enhance her performance. She confided in us, “I was thrilled that the scene depicted Kay’s first encounter with Lady Tressilian, and she was a bit anxious. I was trying to stand and speak correctly, just as she was… and it somewhat resonated with me. There was a likeness there.” Keene explained, “I had a brief encounter with [Anjelica] in her dressing room before we entered… which is undeniably exhilarating and nerve-wracking. But she was so friendly, warm, and delightful that it greatly eased my nerves.

Given that the show is an adaption of a book, it often sparks curiosity among viewers as to how closely the cast and crew may have referred back to the original work while creating their adapted version. Vasan shared insights into her approach:

As a film enthusiast, I embarked on an exciting journey with a script adaptation that was entirely new to me. It wasn’t a book I had previously read, but curiosity led me to explore its novel form. The director, Sam Yates, shared some insights about the minor alterations and adjustments made from the books. Reading the novel, I found that certain aspects of Mary’s character were subtly hinted at in the adaptation, but not fully explored. To my delight, the director skillfully expanded on these elements, offering a more comprehensive portrayal. I admired the thought process behind this approach and felt it was a collaborative effort between the author and him.

Collaboration undeniably yielded an exciting conclusion, as evidenced by the fact that Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero is now available for streaming on BritBox.
