8 Shocking Changes in Captain America: Brave New World You Missed

Despite being somewhat disorganized at times, the Marvel Cinematic Universe managed to produce a generally pleasing addition to the Captain America series that didn’t disappoint. The groundbreaking science fiction series Brave New World served as a catalyst for many significant elements within the MCU, including the revelation of Celestial Island, the introduction of Adamantium, the formation of a new Avengers team, and the resurrection of various plotlines that had been hanging since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

Although the movie generally provided an entertaining experience within the franchise, it fell short in numerous areas compared to the initial script. Fans eagerly anticipated certain details revealed before production issues, such as reshoots, which resulted in some aspects being omitted. Consequently, Marvel enthusiasts are left pondering the potential outcome if these original concepts had been fully realized and brought to life on the big screen.

His Design Changed Drastically Before the Film’s Release

In an interview, Tim Blake Nelson, who played Samuel Sterns in both “The Incredible Hulk” and “Captain America: Brave New World”, disclosed that Marvel actually filmed the movie twice, with his scenes being used again during reshoots. This was probably quite noticeable to any fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Prior to the Writer’s Guild of America strike in 2023, promotional artwork hinting at the long-awaited return of Sterns as his villainous persona, The Leader, had been unveiled.

In these pictures, The Leader appeared quite distinct from how viewers saw him in the cinematic version of “Captain America: Brave New World.” Initially, the script stayed truer to the character’s classic roots, featuring a design reminiscent of the villain’s original comic book appearance with an exaggerated head size. Funko even produced a Pop! vinyl figure based on this original design. However, due to extensive reshoots, the design was significantly altered, resulting in a more grotesque look for the character that made it into the final film. Given the negative reception of 2011’s “Green Lantern,” opting for a new design for The Leader seemed logical. It’s challenging to dispute that this change resulted in one of the standout aspects of “Captain America: Brave New World.

With A Few Notable Actors Filling the Roles

Over the years, The Serpent Society has been perceived as one of Captain America’s quirkier villain groups, characterized by their snake-themed names and abilities. In Robert Kirkman’s Invincible comics, this was humorously portrayed through the supervillain group called the Lizard League. Despite the team’s seemingly comical schtick, Captain America: Brave New World managed to make them appear more realistic and consistent with the political thriller tone.

It appears that many members of the Society had minimal or no screen time in the final movie, which was significantly different from their comic book counterparts. Despite the limited and hurried material he received, the actor did an exceptional job. Moreover, during the reshoots of Brave New World, some notable characters like Seth Rollins (WWE superstar) and Rosa Salazar’s Diamondback were eliminated. Although it is disappointing that they weren’t included, Esposito’s spot-on portrayal hints at potential future appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It Could Even Absorb Gamma Radiation

Initially, the role of Adamantium in “Captain America: Brave New World” was intended to be more significant within the storyline. If it had been implemented as originally planned, the impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe could have been substantial. In the initial draft, Adamantium was designed to absorb gamma radiation, which would have significantly influenced the final battle between Captain America and Red Hulk.

It appears that Adamantium was merely used as a narrative tool to fuel the tension between America and Japan during Thaddeus Ross’ tumultuous presidency in the film. Although this twist could work well in Brave New World, it would have been more satisfying to see the classic Marvel element play a more substantial role. Nonetheless, its appearance opens up the possibility of a new Wolverine character emerging in the mainline MCU’s 616 universe. Figuring out how this might happen is a complicated issue with many potential complications.

Fan-favorite Amadeus Cho Appeared In the Original Cut Of the Film

In an intriguing twist from the initial script for “Captain America: Brave New World,” Amadeus Cho is now set to make an appearance. Unlike in the original script, Cho wasn’t part of the film, but the rewrite includes him. This addition occurred during reshoots with Logan Kim portraying the character. However, another alteration took place during post-production when Cho was removed from the movie. Instead, pickup shots were utilized to advance the plot featuring a different character.

In a fashion reminiscent of the Serpent Society situation, another character with charm and acting prowess was unexpectedly cut from the movie just before its release. This move hints that there could be plans to introduce this character in future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions. Considering how the MCU has been expanding the Incredible Hulk section of the universe, it’s only a matter of when, not if, Amadeus and his alter ego will reappear on our screens.

Teasing Something “Big And Bad” Was Coming

Originally, Amadeus Cho’s alter ego, Brawn, was intended to be part of the plot for Captain America: Brave New World. However, as of this writing, the specific role that The Totally Awesome Hulk might play remains unclear. Nonetheless, hardcore MCU fans would have been thrilled to see Brawn make an appearance in some capacity.

Based on reports from someone fortunate enough to attend a pre-release screening of Captain America: Brave New World, it was suggested that Samuel Sterns would reveal himself as Brawn’s creator. In the initial version screened for test audiences, Captain America (Sam Wilson) inquired about Sterns giving Cho “Hulk serum”, to which Sterns would have warned Sam about an impending threat. Given that The Leader was intended to hint at something ominous on the horizon, viewers should not be taken aback if Amadeus appears later in the storyline.

Instead, She Was Repurposed As Another Black Widow

In the early version of “Captain America: Brave New World” (originally titled “New World Order”), the character of Ruth Bat-Seraph was intended to be a closer representation of her comic book counterpart, Sabra. However, Sabra has always been a divisive figure among Marvel Comics fans due to her controversial background, even when she first appeared on the scene. Initially, Sabra engaged in combat with the Hulk, using the death of a Palestinian boy as her rationale – an action that she seemed not to care about personally. This character has consistently sparked strong negative reactions from Marvel’s main fanbase.

In the thrilling world of “Captain America: New World Order,” stepping into the shoes of characters such as Yelena Belova or the legendary Avenger, Natasha Romanoff was my goal. Instead of embodying her mutant powers from the original comics, Bat-Seraph was reimagined as another skilled combatant without any genuine superhuman abilities. Though the controversy was toned down a common theme in “Brave New World” perhaps this made Sabra seem like an underdeveloped add-on rather than a key player. Shira Haas delivered a commendable performance as the character, so it’s plausible that we’ll see more of Sabra in future installments.

A Funeral Scene Was Shot For Harrison Ford’s Character

In the movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” President Thaddeus Ross stood out as one of the main attractions, and when combined with Harrison Ford’s exceptional acting skills, he became a pivotal moment in the film. The unexpected passing of William Hurt left the character’s future uncertain, but given Ross’s significance in the comic books, it was hard to dismiss him. Ford took on the challenge admirably, not only reinventing the character for “Brave New World’s” unique narrative but also introducing a chilling menace that surpassed Hurt’s earlier portrayals.

Initially, Ross was planned to die after his intense showdown with Captain America, mirroring tragic real-life incidents. As previously stated, the script of Brave New World originally proposed that Adamantium could absorb gamma radiation, a plot device that would have allowed Sam Wilson to defeat Red Hulk in the film’s finale. Fortunately, this plot point was altered at some stage, meaning Red Hulk continues to have a role in the MCU, despite Ross’ funeral scene being written based on Brave New World’s original script.

This Was the Film’s Original Post-Credits Scene

In “Captain America: Brave New World,” Liv Tyler reappeared as Betty Ross in the MCU, similar to Samuel Sterns, a crucial character from “The Incredible Hulk” movie that hadn’t been seen since the Phase 1 film. Fans had believed that Thaddeus Ross would be the only character carried forward from the 2008 film, which was the MCU’s second adventure. However, Thaddeus Ross served well as a recurring antagonist who didn’t require immediate attention, making it feasible to use him as a connecting element without delving too deeply into the Edward Norton-led “Hulk” film again.

Initially, it was intended for Betty to appear more prominently in the post-credits of “Brave New World,” but this didn’t happen as planned. Instead, her reunion with Ross, her father, was relatively underwhelming, occurring through a glass partition in the MCU’s high-security supervillain prison, The Raft. In the original script, Betty would have encountered a monster in the woods behind her house, with its angry, glowing red eyes, before it disappeared. However, this encounter didn’t make it into the final scene.
