Gina Carano Slams Lucasfilm Over ‘Welcome to the Rebellion’ Slogan

On Wednesday, I, a former star of The Mandalorian (specifically Gina Carano), couldn’t help but notice an uncanny resemblance between the new tagline for Andor Season 2 and a tweet I had shared before. In a recent post on social media platform X, I called attention to the phrase “Welcome to the Rebellion,” which is being heavily used in Andor’s promotional materials, as it echoes my past tweet and the tagline on merchandise featuring my character, Cara Dune. Given my current legal dispute with The Walt Disney Company, Lucasfilm, and Huckleberry Productions over my dismissal from The Mandalorian in 2021, I couldn’t help but take this opportunity to offer a subtle critique of the franchise’s creative marketing tactics.

Gina Carano’s Quotes and the Welcome to the Rebellion Collection

In a post she published on Tuesday, she referenced a tweet from February 12, 2021, in which Gina Carano wrote, “This is just the beginning.. welcome to the rebellion.” Accompanying this tweet was an image of a T-shirt featuring her character, Cara Dune, with the phrases “Fight the Empire” and “Welcome to the Rebellion.” In her post, Gina Carano humorously commented, “I bet they were all brainstorming in the writers room thinking… Hmmm, let’s make our catchphrase… ‘Welcome to The Rebellion.’ lol.. 😂”. She also mentioned that Jay David’s merchandise collection, which has been available for purchase for 4 years, includes content based on a drunk version of the Star Wars character, 3PO.

Lawsuit Against Disney

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve recently followed the developments between Gina Carano and The Walt Disney Company. In an unusual turn of events, they reached a protective agreement in her lawsuit, after the court ordered Disney to cease delaying the delivery of case-related documents. Gina was dismissed from ‘The Mandalorian’ in 2021 due to a sequence of social media posts that seemingly questioned the extent of societal and governmental backlash. At the time, Lucasfilm expressed their disapproval, labeling her posts as “offensive and unsuitable.” However, Carano contends that she was terminated wrongfully, arguing that she was let go for expressing political views that didn’t align with Lucasfilm’s loosely defined values. Interestingly, actors like Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, and Gina’s Mandalorian co-star Pedro Pascal, seemed to face no consequences despite what could be argued as more severe and malicious political posts on social media.

Andor Marketing

As the second season of Andor nears its premiere in a week, Lucasfilm could be trying to capitalize on any social media traction they can by incorporating “Welcome to the Rebellion” into their messaging. This phrase’s relevance doesn’t seem accidental, as Gina Carano is highly recognized within the Star Wars community and often makes strong connections with fans at conventions.

It’s not new that the phrase has been tied to the broader Star Wars tale of resisting the Empire, but it sparks debates about how attentive Lucasfilm and Disney are to Gina Carano’s fan base on social media. Andor Season 1 was initially seen as a ratings flop for Disney+ when it premiered, yet with subsequent Star Wars shows faltering, many are questioning the rationale behind investing $645 million into two seasons of a show that appears to be largely overlooked by viewers. Whether this phrase similarity will factor into Carano’s legal defense is uncertain, but for now, she’s keeping her rebellion against Disney in the limelight.

Do you think Lucasfilm was intentional in using Gina Carano’s Welcome to the Rebellion slogan?
