Karla Sofía Gascón’s New Film Sparks Outrage: Is ‘The Life Lift’ Too Controversial?

After recent news about Emilia Pérez’s star, Karla Sofía Gascón, stirring up trouble due to her past social media posts, she is once again causing a stir with her new movie titled The Life Lift. This film will be directed by first-timer Stefania Rossella Grassi, and it will also feature Vincent Gallo, who isn’t new to controversy. In this movie, Gascón plays a psychiatrist who represents both good and evil, as she embodies God and the devil.

Today, Variety announced a psychological thriller titled “The Life Lift” featuring Gallo as Gabriel, a man living in a small New York apartment. He’s being harassed by cryptic notes left in the building’s elevator, which seem to command him to carry out gruesome murders of three other tenants who, in turn, desire to eliminate their next-of-kin. The film has an eerie resemblance to the series “The X-Files“.

Grassi shared that the film titled “The Life Lift” is currently being worked on and has an estimated budget of approximately $3 million. Filming for this project is anticipated to commence towards the end of 2025 and continue until February 2026. Known as “disturbing, fiery, and captivating,” the release date is yet to be announced, and it remains unclear how Gascón’s psychiatrist character interacts with the plot; however, it’s speculated that she will likely play a supporting role to Gallo’s character, Gabriel, who appears to be mentally troubled, possibly under her control.

Karla Sofía Gascón and Vincent Gallo Are a Match Made in Hell

As Grassi embarks on her directorial debut with the film The Life Lift, it’s clear that she has a formidable task ahead, managing two substantial personalities. With Emilia Pérez in the spotlight following January’s revelation of her past racially charged social media posts and subsequent controversy surrounding her Oscar loss for Best Actress, all eyes will be on both Gascón and Gallo as production unfolds.

In the course of his career, Gallo has often found himself embroiled in controversy, such as with the film The Brown Bunny, and more recently with the movie The Policeman. Starring Gallo as real-life serial killer and rapist Joseph James DeAngelo, this film is currently undergoing post-production. However, it’s not the content of the movie that has caused a stir; instead, accusations from three actresses have led to an investigation by the Screen Actors Guild in 2024. These women alleged that Gallo made derogatory comments and intimidated them during auditions. The SAG-AFTRA stated at the time they would “keep monitoring and investigating” these allegations, but no updates have been shared on any findings so far.

As a cinephile, I find myself intrigued by the pairing of Gascón and Gallo, two actors with a history that could be likened to a pact forged in the inferno. Director Grassi now stands at the helm, tasked with managing these two fiery personalities should tensions escalate. If you’re eager to witness Gascón’s acting prowess, catch her in the currently streaming Netflix series Emilia Pérez. As for Gallo, we’ll have to wait and see when his upcoming film The Policeman finally graces our screens.
