Space Leone is preparing to debut an exhibition titled “All in Each“, showcasing the solo work of Grace Atkinson, a New Zealand-born artist based in Paris who specializes in textiles. The exhibition will be open to the public starting on Friday, April 25 and will run until May 18. It features both new pieces specifically commissioned for this event as well as previous works, interacting with classic designs from Spazio Leone’s collection. This unique blend fosters a lively dialogue between modern textile artistry and enduring design principles.
The exhibition is named after the book “Knots” by psychologist R.D. Laing, which delves into human relationships and intricacies poetically. Atkinson delves into the subjective nature of perception through her unique works that adjust environments and stimulate discussions between practicality and beauty. Her pieces consist of handwoven and hand-painted blankets and rugs with distorted, flowing patterns, along with silk and cotton fiber tapestries woven together. Additionally, she introduces a versatile chair and footstool set that can be rearranged into a sculptural artwork.
The exhibition showcases exclusive items made from 100% pure virgin wool using an age-old technique by the Hutsuls dating back to the 14th century. These pieces are woven on wooden looms, gently felted in a mountain stream, sun-dried, and then carefully brushed to create a fluffy texture. They serve both as rugs due to their weight and blankets due to their lightness. Artisanal touches like embedded twigs or leaves and natural color variations contribute to their unique allure.
Originating from New Zealand, Grace Atkinson currently resides and works in Paris. Her focus lies in exploring the connection between architecture, sensation, surface, and texture. She is dedicated to preserving age-old craftsmanship techniques and often collaborates with skilled artisans. Her work showcases the emotional depth of fabrics and mirrors tactile sensations, all while blending traditional approaches with modern design aesthetics. Some of her creations can be previewed from all in each in the gallery displayed above.
