Lewis Hamilton Opens Up About Rebellious Fashion Choices That Shocked F1 Bosses

Lewis Hamilton has spoken candidly about his rebellion against the unappealing clothing styles imposed on him when he initially entered Formula One racing.

Currently, the racecar driver, aged 40, is equally recognized for his unique fashion flair as he is for his skill on the racetrack.

However, Lewis mentioned in a recent interview that self-expression through fashion wasn’t always confident for him earlier in his career, as he once felt pressured to conform to certain expectations or ‘mold.’

In an interview for Vogue’s May issue of the Met Gala, where he graced the cover alongside fellow co-chairs Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams, Lewis revealed that he didn’t encounter much diversity or fashion during his upbringing. As a result, he satisfied his curiosity about style through magazines, movies, and music videos.

Inspired by the styles of Cab Calloway and André Leon Talley, Lewis embarked on an exploration of his personal fashion, uncovering discounted designer items at thrift shops and building the self-assurance to understand and express his true identity.

Yet, an encounter with a racing manager caused him to ponder if he needed to adjust his wardrobe to conform to expectations.

He recalled: ‘As I was about to join Formula 1, a superior gave me a critical once-over, clearly disapproving of my attire. I believe I was dressed in FUBU and Timbs at the time. In that moment, I thought, Oh no, I really need to conform to this image. My father also wanted me to conform to this mold.’

After enduring discomfort with the traditionally demanding fashion norms for Formula 1 drivers, Lewis shared his experience of breaking free from these expectations and expressing himself by choosing his own racewear attire.

Initially, when I joined Formula 1, I was restricted to wearing formal suits and team uniforms, which was really uncomfortable for me. I didn’t feel like my true self in those clothes.

In time, I mustered enough bravery to surpass the limitations and declare, “See, I intend to show up at the track wearing what I choose. I’m already here – you can’t make me leave or alter my attire.” The resistance I faced was immense.

Following the significant impression made by ‘my little runway’ and solidifying himself as a style trendsetter, Lewis proceeded to inspire other racers, urging them to likewise showcase their unique styles as well.

Lewis has made significant progress in his fashion style and is expected to impress on the red carpet during the upcoming Met Gala next month, as he’s one of its co-chairs.

2021’s topic is elegantly titled “Superfine: Crafting Black Elegance,” drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s literary work, “Slaves to Fashion: The Evolution of Black Dandyism and the Expression of Black Diasporic Identity.

The athlete expresses optimism that the competition will stimulate discussions and reinforce the profound bond between fashion and personal identity, with a special emphasis on its roots within Black communities.

Later in the month, Lewis left fans stunned at the Japanese Grand Prix with his fresh haircut.

In his new tenure at Ferrari following his departure from Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton has had a somewhat challenging beginning, as evidenced by his placing of 10th in the Australian Grand Prix and his subsequent disqualification from the Chinese Grand Prix, where he initially placed fifth. However, he managed to triumph in the sprint race.

After securing a seventh-place finish at Suzuka, it was hard not to miss the change in Lewis Hamilton’s outward appearance, as keen observers swiftly pointed out.

Ahead of the Grand Prix getting underway, Hamilton was seen preparing for the race next to his car.

While readjusting his balaclava, a protective headgear typically worn by drivers, he chose to remove it entirely to rearrange his hair properly.

In my expertise, I often find myself admiring the unique hairstyles of famous figures, and Hamilton is no exception. While he typically sports a braided do, he’s been known to let his natural hair flow freely on occasions. And let me tell you, his carefully crafted cornrows are a sight to behold when he decides to unfurl them!

Rather than being short and neat, his hair was long and somewhat unruly as he tried to style it into a bun.

Several fans were quick to pick up on this as one said: ‘Lewis with his hair unbraided– hello!’

Another added: ‘Love it. Let it out lewis.’

More supporters chimed in, with one exclaiming, “Wow, really?” Another expressed astonishment, saying, “I can’t believe it’s falling apart! Perhaps it’s time for a new braid.
